Car's getting early 2.0 swapped for a 2.7. It didn't have an oil cooler fitted, as I'm guessing 2.5s do, so i was thinking about doing it myself when the car comes back.
It's away at the garage waiting finishing, so i can't see it at the minute.
Question is, apart from the cooler itself and the pipes, what else is involved with fitting? I'm guessing oil filter head, unless the 2.7 is compatable.
Anyone any clues?
Thanks,
Mick

looking at oem there is a diffenerce in the pipes and cooler between the early and late 325 engine, not sure whether you'd need the one to match the car to get the mounting position right (early type) or the one to match the engine (late type) to get the pipes right.

Thanks for that Chris.
I've got my eye on a cooler out of an '88 sport that Ian Lessiter's got up for sale. The e28 was also an 88.....

Why do you feel you need an oil cooler?
They just leak anyway.

As the engines bigger what???
I took mine off and have no problems.
If your going turbo or on the track fit one otherwise I don't see the point.

Like I said unless your going turbo where oil temps will be higher from the turbo or use the car on the track I don't see the point unless you live in a hot country.

Alot of people me include have bypassed the coolant lines that go to the throttlebody because they are only really needed in cold countries. This is the opposite.

Sorry but an oil cooler is a must for any car and why you would want to get rid of it is beyond me.

So why don't all cars have them?

I agree, wouldn't like to know what oil temperature mine would run without its oil cooler.Demlotcrew wrote:Sorry but an oil cooler is a must for any car and why you would want to get rid of it is beyond me.

If you are building a 2.7 the chances are you like a spirited drive every now and then so to dump the oil cooler would be silly imo.chu346 wrote:So why don't all cars have them?

I'm not saying dump it if you have it and it's not leaking. My one was leaking, I bought a replacement off here and some idiot sold me one for a different car so decided to dump them both. Not had any problems and was recommend by many on here to dump it.
BTW not that it makes much difference mine is a 2.7 aswell.

when oil gets too hot it breaks down causing possible damage to the engine over time no? I can see the oil cooler bieng useful for this reason.

Maybe you could fit an oil temp gauge instead and keep an eye on the situation?

Oil technology has advanced massively since the M20B25 was introduced, and I wouldn't worry in the slightest about the lack of an oil cooler for road use.
None of the later M5x series of engines have an oil cooler.

Thats right Brian but I do intend on fitting a cooler to mine at some point to benefit the overall engine cooling, just sorting out a deal involving an Alpina B3 3.2 oil filter housing with take off for cooler lines at the moment,

Exactly. A 318iS for example works much harder and they don't have one. If it's there and not leaking then fine but to do without it and use a good quality semi synth would be okay. If you drive down the motorway at 6000 rpm on a very hot day then yes, then an old skool 20/50 oil will get hot.Brianmoooore wrote:Oil technology has advanced massively since the M20B25 was introduced, and I wouldn't worry in the slightest about the lack of an oil cooler for road use.
