Right im not planning to do one any time soon but the is a high chance i will in the future. i have a 316 m10 Carb, what would be the easiest engine conversion to gain more power, would a 318is m42, or 323i conversion be fairly staight forward.

Not sure about upgrading parts but the M10 is a very very strong engine so will stand a fair bit of boost.

If you are going turbo an early 318i (M10) engine would come in handy, you will need the return fuel line, tank and electric fuel pump also as your carb version doesnt have this.
My first E30 was a 316, I bought a 325i and just swapped all the bits over in a weekend

Engine, box, steering rack and suspension complete on subframe, same for the rear, just drop everything down on the beam then tank change before refitting. Donor car is the quickest and easiest way, cheaper too.
If I were you id get an insurance quote before deciding which way to go

kind of along the same lines, i had an m10 316 that generally just got abused most of the time i owned it. never ever had any problems with the car whatsoever. this was in my 19yr im a boy racer phase, i used to race anything and didnt have have much respect for the engine as it was only an m10. after i scrapped the car i learned that the m10 was used in the 2002 turbo. if only i had known..

I kinda went thru the first car period too. Now Im 19 and planning on building two of the best looking E30's in ireland
I have a friend in insurance, so he'll try the best he can with the 318iS( some insurance companies dont insure them till your 21, maybe its cause they read twin-cam
), Not hoping for much in case I get dissapointed. But he'll try his best. My insurance for the 316 was 2000euro (around 1400 sterling I suppose) for my 1st year with a full licence
@ Maxfield, nice bus to look forward to mate. Wat is it? 3??i
Even if its a debadged 316. It'll still get noticed

Seriously? I am getting one of these, and to save me fitting the engine complete with box etc, if I can just do this that would be much simpler. Will I not need to shorten the prop then or anything? And would the M10 box be alright with the 220bhp? What about clutch/flywheel?m-dtech wrote:316 m10 gearbox mates to the m30b35

Ask Pacerpete nicely and he'll let you sit on his knee for the initial lessons.Alex wrote:cheers wont be doing it for a few years coz im only 16 at moment but will be taking lessons in few months.
Number one: Get the suspension and brakes sorted. Some decent shocks and springs plus vented front brakes - a pair of 325i front legs will be a good starting place.
As for making it go faster the best way is to ring up someone like Jaymic and see if they still do the twin DCOE Weber kits for the M10. It will need jetting on a dyno but should give you a 20 bhp upgrade and will sound superb opened up. A carbed 316 is suprisingly torquey and just substituting the shite Pierburg for a 32/36 twin choke Weber from a 2 litre Ford will make it better. You'll need an adaptor plate from Webcon and forget the regular Weber conversion carbs as they're crap.
But as ever, the best advice is to gradually improve your 316 with inexpensive insurance friendly mods and when the inurance allows, sell it and buy a 325i.
Carmine red, thast's a rare colour! Looks tidy.

rallydesign also do carb adaptors/intake manifolds for webbers if you struggle to find them.Andyboy wrote:Ask Pacerpete nicely and he'll let you sit on his knee for the initial lessons.Alex wrote:cheers wont be doing it for a few years coz im only 16 at moment but will be taking lessons in few months.![]()

BTTT, will the m10 box definately mate to the 3.5? And it will use standard prop/shifter etc? I guess the only downside will be that the engine will be in a wanky position fore/aft? lol. If this can be done then it saves a lot of hassle that's for sure!! Would only be temporary til I get more time to fit the getrag 265 box. Is the m10 box the 245 box?

ive just read up in a BMW e30 book i have that another way to increase the power in 316 is to fit it with a solex 32/32 DIDTA twin choke carb from a e21 320/4cyl or the 2002 carb then combine that with a free flow air filter in the 320 air cleaner box this is supposed to add about 10bhp
has anyone tryed it, does it sound like a good idea!!
Would a e21 320 replacement carb do the same.

the m10 box fits the m30 engine and will give you a better final drive ratio for an e30 diff.
a 2.0 prop needs to be uses as the m10 prop is too long.
engine position will be the same.

Dude, keep the m10!
It might be an old carb engine and only have 90bhp, but for your age its spot on. I've got a 1.8 m10 and I think its the best engine I've ever driven (I have only driven a few.
Its a good strong engine which can handle almost anything you throw at it and keep coming back for more.
I've got a set of carbs sat in the spare room ready to fit, your insurers probably wont like that, just strip the car to reduce weight and have a word with ant about a turbo, how much boost you want will dictate the price i think but it'd be a fun fun car which would make for a wicked sleeper!
M10 = the thinking mans way forward ............... (albeit not very quickly in stock form)
