EWS for M52

You need the EWS unit itself plus all the plugs, transponder unit, loop and key. I think that's it.
No idea where the EWS is, I guess N/S, whereas the transponder and loop are in or near the column shroud.

Well, on mine the EWS ecu connector (X1659) pin 4 connects via the X20 to the Motronic pin 66 (enable signal). Also (X1659) pin 13 goes to (X1660) transponder unit pin 1. The other wires to connect to the X1659 are perm live to pin 5 and ground to pin 7.

Small transmit/receive module (size of a match box)
Key
Loop aerial
The EWS module on an E36 is found behind the glovebox.

The transmit receive module is found on the other end of the green wires running from the loop aerial on the end of the ignition barrel.

Is there any way around the engine ECU needing to be matched as well?
The only bits that need to be matched are the key, ECU and EWS module. The other parts can come from any E36.

It wasn't 'that' bad. I bought a full lock kit - all door locks, ignition barrel, keys, ECU, EWS etc from ebay for £100.
When I had the mis-timing issue (180 degees out) I suspected te ECU wasn't compatible, as some info from a BMW specialist led me to believe the crank trigger changed position at 10/98. My engine was post that date and the ECU was pre... Assuming this was the case I bought another whole set from a BMW breakers - can't remember which, I think it was FAB or similar. That one was about £230 I seem to remember... so it started to make my £300 M52 engine 'expensive'.
(Incidentally, they did change the crank trigger from a wheel on the front of the engine to a sensor in the side of the block that read a smaller wheel on the side of the crank at that date - it turns out the 'timing' of the signal is still the same and any ECU will run either engine so my swap wasn't necessary)
Anyway, the lesson is don't lose the chip!
If anyone wants a full EWS 'kit' I now have a spare - I also have a full set for an M52b25 as the breaker sent a kit for a 323i initially and have failed thus far to send a courier to collect it.

Ste, is there any reason you used EWS as opposed to a standard set up? I'm sure you could run a 2.8 with an M50 loom, 325i manifold/tb/injectors. Or did you have a really late one with the crank sensor at the back of the block by the starter?

I used the M52 loom because my M52 came fitted with it so it was free. To buy a seperate M50 loom would have cost money I didn't ned to spend. I'd have also lost the vanos, and been running with an ECU map not intended for the car, plus I'd have lost the security feature of the EWS which is the whole point of it!
I didn't get involved with wiring the EWS in. Ian Haynes lives a 2 minute walk from my house and is easily bribed with curry

You need the chip that's coded to that EWS module, or you need another EWS module that comes with a matching chip. You really need the matching ECU, although it is possible to align an ECU to a different EWS module. I've yet to get this to work though. You would really need to fit the parts in an E36 328, and then do it.
If you are on very good terms with your dealer, you may be able to get them to order you a replacement key (complete with chip) for the EWS module you have already. The VIN number on the ECU is enough info to get the correct one. They usually want to see a V5 and proof of ID though, so not always possible on a converted car.

I wont be able to get a V5 but my man in the parts said any DVLA type doc with the cars details will do as long as I also have a receipt to prove I bought the car in good faith.

My engine came without a key, and my dealer got me one without too much fuss. This was a while back though, and I believe there's more paperwork involved. Hopefully they will sort you out, as it will make life a whole lot cheaper/easier

yeah, when i got my keys at the dealer they wanted me to bring all paperwork that showed proof i purchased the engine and all #s related to the vehicle i got the engine from. Once i did that they happily gave me the keys =D

I had problem with M52B28 ald EWS and I give computer for clear from EWS and sond lambda. And no is OK. My computer don't see EWS and lambda. Cost 190 pounds

Does anyone have a picture of all things including the loom, EWS related please?
And is the systen you guys are discussing identical in parts and principal to an S50?
I need to know this as ive been offered an S50B32 locally which apart from this EWS stuff i know is is all there for a conversion, so im thinking of binning the M30 as i still dont have all the relevant parts and going for this intsead.

There is a pic of the parts on the first page tomson, everything except the key, I think the loom is part of the main harness so just snipped a decent length as there are only three or four wires needed to unlock the ECU and start the engine

I viewed the S50B32 earlier on and on a pallet is just like an M20 with regards to there is an engine, with loom attatched and a plug on the end for the ecu. I dont know why but i expected it to be a whole lot more complicated! Im bang up for havin a bash at this but having just read the other thread by oldskool the wiring he has done looks like a mare and looks so different to what saw earlier!

The wiring isn't hard, it is however very time consuming to do it the way I have gone about it. If you are happy to use the E36 covers and put the ECU on the nearside then it would be a fair bit easier as there wouldn't be that much paring out to do.DanThe wrote:Wiring isnt hard at all mate![]()

I wanted to thin down my loom and get rid of what is quite frankly a lot of wiring that isn't required. I also liked the finished but albeit constrictive 4 cylinder covers. To be honest, without proper organisation it's a little like getting an elephant in a suitcase.
When BMW build these looms they are designed and installed to work in multiple layers - hence a lot of wiring is duplicated and can be rearranged. Given a large amount of patience and one of Mr. Haynes quite wonderful wiring charts of course!
The best bit for me, is that by doing it in this way I have now got a far better understanding how the whole setup operates. Certainly not to the same level as Ian has though
If you want to keep the conversion quick, then don't do it my way!
Oh, and BTW, it's S50
