Hello E30's,

I am looking to buy an E30 in the near future, but all seem underpowered, so im thinking along lines of turbocharged engine i can use in racing/trackdays. What would i need in terms of parts and modifications to drop in a YB 200 or 205 block? is there a particular model of E30 which makes for an easier conversion or does it no matter?

speak to a zone member called Fuzzy, he is running a YB turbo setup

you are best off starting with a 325 or a touring as they have better suspension & brakes

hello mate, another would be convert to cossie power i see. excellent :D the 200 block is regarded as the strongest and best block to start with.as said i have the cossie engine,t5 rwd gearbox mated to the original e30 lsd witha custom prop, cosworth at the front and bmw at the rear all balanced and ready to go for £90 from a company in falkirk called Propshaft Services .there is a few issues to sort out along the way but nothing drastic.i payed £2600 for labour only to fit the engine as i already owned all parts needed but if you need to buy everything then budget another £3000-£4000+ for decent engine, turbo, gearbox, cooler, rad, ecu, loom etc. pm me if you want more details :thumb:

WOW you actually done it, whats it like handling and performance wise? what sort of issues did you encounter?
Labour wont be a problem doing it myself on the weekends, i roughly know how much the donor parts will be (dabbled with yb's before) Physically fitting it in an e30 i can do mounts, brackets and linkages, wiring and all that if i know what needs to be done; any hints be handy mate.

Fuzzy your car is mega

iirc paul did his slightly different to mine as i used the original brake servo and fabricated a new alloy sump to fit around the front crossmember rather than alter the steering or crossmember.i also used the 4wd turbo manifold rather than the 2wd as it fouled on the inner wing.my front chassis legs were cut and reshaped to allow a 2wd rad and intercooler to fit.i also kept the original e30 hydraulic clutch rather than use the cosworth clutch cable by welding a mounting bracket to the cosworth t5 gearbox housing. (although i refer to it as " i used" the work was carried out by a garage for me) winkeye

[quote="fuzzy"] the 200 block is regarded as the strongest and best block to start with. [quote]

I thought the 205 had the thickest walls...

Certainly prized for the 2.1 built pintos.

200 block is the strongest and the only way to go if you want big bhp? although 205 good for up to 400bhp which is enough in the e30s, trust me i know!

Rightyo im convinced with the YB is the best way to go, i be getting on the hunt for the bits i need, including the car. Fuzzy i assume you wanted to keep the e30 hydrualic clutch as its lighter and usable everyday rather than the ford cable one?

no i kept the bmw hydraulic clutch because the last time i had a cossie conversion done on a toyota celica the clutch cable snapped every couple of months.even heavy duty ones.

I got my eye on 2 e30 local to me a 325 going for £700 and a 318 estate for £1150 both 89 models in black. Also have an engine lined up its a small turbo t25 from a soon to be broken escort cosworth but it hasnt got ecu or looms, no intercooler or rad so i cant see it running he wants £1600 for the engine, turbo, mtx75 box :?

Hi with regards to a small turbo engine (t25) its better to use a marelli loom and ecu set up( from any saff cos or a new pectal loom ) its a better setup and alot easier to get 350+ bhp and also the engine looms in a escos are built into the full car loom and would be a pig to separate
