This might sound really dumb but is there any reason why you couldn't drill the flywheel from an auto to carry a clutch? Too thin perhaps?

Was looking at the real oem pages for the M70b50 and the two parts look pretty similar, got me thinking especially as a manual flywheel is $$$

Im not famaliar with the flywheel you describe but generally autos just have a thin plate with a ring gear attached its not the right shape to bolt a clutch to and probably couldnt take the axial loading of the release bearing pressing against the pressure plate as a torque converter doesnt produce any axial load.

The flywheel on an auto IS the torque converter. The bit carrying the starter ring gear is just a thin steel plate.
