lo guys.Im hopefully looking at replacing my 1.8i with an IS after the summer (September time i recon) Im not going 2.5 purely because ill be 18 still and cant be bothered to pay 3 grand for insurance, and the is are awesome anyway :P

But im hoping to do somthing a little bit differnt to it.

Id like to try and see if its possible to rig up a nice Supercharger and all the bits within a realistic price range.
Ive heard that small units like ones off of a Mini Cooper S can be run without much trouble and they go for a couple of hundred quid.

Whats peoples opinions/knowledge like on Supercharging an M42,their good engines, and a good condition one should handle it well, but would it work ok?

What bits would be needed. Im to clued up on suprchargers and Turbos in terms of what you need and what does what.

If someone could maybe give me a run through of the bits needed in a basic setup, bear in mind i dont want to spend rediculous amounts of money as its only somthing to give it a little extra kick (which with an lsd in an IS will be wicked fun ) but im willing to spend it if its worth it!

Cheers

I need to start saving for my next car i think lol

The atlanta supercharger kit is about 2k I think... That's everything you need.

otherwise, off the top of my head you'd need the supercharger, fabricating a new inlet manifold, a way to raise the fuelling (fpr, injectors, fuel pump, dastek would be what i'd go for), a pulley for the supercharger...

Probably looking at 1.5k anyway

really? i mean you can get the mini charger of ebay, (if ur ur nice go to the parts guys in the mini section of ur bm garage and ask when they next check out a charger due to a works upgrade can u have it). this is what my mates doing for his mark2gti :) )

the other bits wont add up to 1.5 in total . would of thought more like 700+

You stole my idea!!! I'll race u :)

I'm gonna do the eaton m45 charger off ebay. on an m40 enigne. dastek unichip for mapping and an e60 air mass meter. fueling system will be uprated as nesc. I'm hoping not to have to as it's only a small blower. I'm gonna install an ait/fuel ratio meter anyway to keep an eye on this and to help mapping the unichip.

The m40 has a spare pulley on the crank that I think can be adapted. maybe the m42 has it too. there's a thread about this in the technical section that explains a few bits.

Somebody did mention that due to less overlap on the m40 cam that it would mod better than the m42.

forgot to note that I'm gonna try without the intercooler first and add one after. get more fun if the car speeds up in stages... always the thrill of fitting the new shiny bit for those few extra horses. lol :))

Ouch, didnt think it would be that much Dom mate.

Does anyone know of any sites where i could possibly read up on supercharging, so that i know what im on about lol, might help decide if i want to actaully do it if i know somthing!

Hoshy, ive got an M40 atm, i was going for the M42+ supercharer idea as their quicker anyways, i just feel the M40 is a bit standard ,not much pull on it.

How much do you recon you will be able to charge your motor up for mate? I dont mind spending the cash if im going to see some results lol

how much is the insurance gonna be for a blowed 1.8 m42 compared to a normally aspirated 2.5 m20. most place would probably prefer you to have the 2.5 to be honest. just a thought.

After watching the Maclaren SLR on Top Gear im addicted to the supercharger belt whine and im wondering if i'll get that if i supercharged my car.

If i could have that whine id be abusing the car non stop, slowing down speeding up, slowing down, speeding up.

I reckon it'll cost about the following

charger off ebay: 150
unichip: 165 (trade price and mapped myself)
pipework: fuck knows. not more than 200 I guess
e36 air mass meter: 40/50?
fuel system depends on how much needs doing.

Overall I'd like to get it done around the 500 area.

I'm hoping to get about 160/165 bhp out of this. In fairness I'm not prepared in any way for the challenge but it *must* be possible :)

There must be cheaper ways to get 20bhp?

Why not just drop a 3.5 lump in?

it's actually 55/60 odd bhp as I'm on the m40 not the m42.

If I wanted a new engine I could... Even considered a cosworth engine. (ducks) But I want to supercharge my m40. because I can. because it's cool. I just want to. I have a 325i sitting on the drive doing bugger all (insurance costs) that I'm sure I could have the engine out of but I want to supercharge MY engine. It's my first rear wheel drive car and my last car was a Corsa 1.2. I've got plenty of time to upgrade to bigger and better later on. Just think how cool it would be telling the grandchildren in years to come how Granddad Evans created a monster out of his little 1.8 4 pot so he could kick the arse of all the nasty evil six potters. lol.

I've got vision up the ass, so just go with it! mate :)

hoshy-That dosnt seem bad, but what supercharger unit would that be using? Do you need any work to the intake manifold?

I dont know whether or not to wait till i get an IS, or maybe think about this in my M40, not sure what be better suited

russ, I'd rather go super than turbo. just has an air (no pun intended) of coolness about it. And the cooper s charger (eaton m45) delivers 15psi at the top end. but being whatever type (roots?) it is it gives reasonable boost down low too. so no shitty lag and extra gains in the bottom end (perfect for beating my mates civic vtec :)

no its bloody stupid and totally irresponsible.

it invalidates our insurance, and shud u have an accident it ultimately affects everyone elses insurance premiums in the long run.

and ignore the idiot who said u cud "might get away" with fitting an m42 instead.

do u seriously think an insuracne investigator, a trained motor engineer in many cases will miss the fact that the car has an extra cam and 8 extra valves ?????

seriously m8 its a bad idea

I can get them new, trade price.

Yes they have to be mapped. It's done via a process of what are called load sites across a range of load / rpm point. You dial in the load to the rolling road, hold the car at the revs the computers displays and then adjust two round knobs. one for fueling and one for advane. After you've mapped the range of load sites you interpolate the values to fill in all loads at all rpm. Process at high load/high revs has to be taken slowly so as not to overheat the engine. ( this of course is all done with the laptop hooked in to the unichip itself.

Absolutely!

Anyone contemplating modding a car should be factoring the cost of insurance in.

If you can't afford that, don't change the car. As said, you're insured to protect others (the 3rd party component) and not just your self.

If you have someone off their bike and their medical bills come in, your insurance company WILL look at your car and then you WON'T be insured meaning you'll be paying the bills yourself forever.

Don't be a twat. Insurance is not optional.

Lol, I'm sorry mate. I've helped my father, who's a mechanic map one car ages ago. He did the RR and I just played with the fueling and ignition knobs until we got max power at each load site. Car was fucking awesome afterwards though. A civic iirc.

He has a RR and he's happy for me to use it. I was never interested in cars til a couple of years ago, I was more into computers. Buy now I've found a nice crossover so I want to get in to mapping. Doubt I'll get very far but I'll have some fun :)

Chaos-True mate, i wouldnt want to jepadise my insurance, iits just whenever family or freinds of mine have had dings and acidents where they had to get the insurance company involved then all wheels, aftermarket parts were taken off instantly before the inspectors had a look etc. Although i highly doubt it would be as easy with a supercharger, or more to the point worth the risk.

Anyone know how much insurance would rape me for if i went for somthing like this? I hell of a lot id imagen?

What otherways can i get power from a m40 motor without doing drastic things lol.....

Hoshy, are you going to be going about this the legit way "ie tell insurance" or not, just wondering what the cost of somthing like this would be, im under 20 so i really doubt somthing like this would be worth it as they charge the earth to insure it!

I fully intend to have it insured but I've not researched costs yet. I'm 23 w/ 2years ncb. As this is a long term project for fun more than pure "make it go fast" I'm not too worried about the extra insurance cost. Once it's done I can always get a "first" car and have the bm as a "second" (yeah, right) car.
