This has been discussed before! can't remember the outcome. You'll need a 318is prop which makes me think the gearbox is different...

Part numbers are different, but can't say for sure about fitments.

Re the prop - isn't that a length thing as the M42 sits further back?

If you can't use it and struggle for a 318is 'box, let me know.

same bolt pattern the difference is a big rubber doughnut that joins the prop to the gearbox.

measure the distance from the m40 engine mount hole to rear of engine and also measure the distance from m42 mount and rear of engine, if both the same then you have no problems.

The rubber coupling is the same for all E30 cars (except M3, 320is and IX models)

The difference is the gearbox output flange is quite a bit longer on the M42 box and some of the internals are different (stronger)

I have a mint 318is/M42 30k miles box for £100

The diffrence between the two boxes is the output flange,
the M42 one sticks out a little bit far back then the M40 one,
by changing out the flange you can use your M40 driveshaft or vice versa..
With great challenges comes great engineering.

I'm based in Kent, so quite a long way to collect. Mileage is 160k - but a very good box, also £50.

the flange is the unit that bolts to the driveshaft from the gearbox
by looking at the two you´ll see the diffrence right away.
