i have read in a few posts that it is more difficult to fit e28 m535i engine into e30, but my car is 87`325ic with older motronic so surely it would be more difficult to fit later e34/e32 m30 engine cos of the wiring differences? i do have a complete e28 m535i, so would it make sense for me to use this? or not. any advise would be appreciated, thanks.

i dont think the wiring is a big thing, but you do need the oil pump and sump from an e34 as it makes it clear the subframe better. im sure some other advice is on its way!!

the wiring is not the issue (although the e34 engine is far easier to wire in anyway)
in your position i would just buy a later engine or complete car. there are lots of small reasons - exhaust manifold, sump/oil pickup as mentioned, coolant pipe on rear of head, larger inlet valves in later engine, much easier to find a gearbox for the later engine if you need one...

ok, but i do also have the dogleg gearbox, i have read a post that says it is a pain to fit but will see when the time comes. i`m currently driving a 91`735i that is too good to break, but cant wait to feel the torque of m30 in e30!

what's a pain to fit - the dogleg box or the e28 engine?
the box fits with an e30 m3 crossmember. the engine needs the bulkhead denting in to miss the rear coolant pipe, and an e34 exhaust manifold/sump/pickup fitting.
i've not had good experience with the dogleg box and i've heard similar stories from others. i like the shift pattern but the bearings tend to get very noisy and there's not a lot you can cheaply do about it.
bear in mind that if you install the e28 engine then change your mind (as i did) you need to remake the engine mounts and all sorts of other bits and pieces - and that if you do break your dogleg box you can't put an e34 box on instead as it won't have the mounts for the motronic 1 flywheel sensors. e28 535i manual boxes aren't exactly growing on trees either

ok mate thanks for the advise, i will have to think about this one then, i was just more worried about the wiring as my e30 is motronic 1 and wasnt sure if i could easily put in a later engine with motronic 2 loom, cos i`m not very clued up on the wiring side! the mechanicals i dont have a problem with.
plus i do have the advantage of 2 garages if needed. thanks again for your help.
