318is E36 engine and Gearbox into E30

I have an E36 M42 Engine and Box. The engine I know will fit with a different sump, but the gearbox is different. Some of the US sites suggest that the E36 Gearbox is closer ratio, also the fifth gear is an overdrive, not sure about this on the E30 box.

Does anyone know what the E36 box is like and whether it is usable? The engine and box have only done 37000 so I would like to use them both.

Have included some pictures of the engine without ancilaries and cleaned up for reference.

Ineterstingly the engine has 2 temperature senders, but looking at the parts catalogue one of them needs changing to the E30 one.

I'm going to leave the internals standard but will be adding

Lightened M20 Flywheel, clutch etc.

1 piece Carbon Propshaft (We make them at work, once sorted will let you know) This gives as much if not more than a lightweight flywheel as you get rid of loads of weight including the centre bearing. All E30's are the same fittings just different lengths.

I have some E36 M3 EVO throttle bodies to play with, not sure how this will go yet...

Also have Z3 Rack...

Will need some management to go with them, probably megasquirt.
Clean engine (needs painting)


E36 Gearbox, What is it, Will it work, is it worth it?

Current Flywheel and Clutch, it's not a dual mass flywheel as these have lots of extra gubbins and the clutch plates don't have springs, but it is bloody heavy


Any Help advice very welcome. It's gonna take a little while but I'll keep adding pictures as I make progress.

should all go in ok but you will have to change afew bit to the older e30 parts. i have a few spare bits if you need anything, ecu, coil pack....

if you want any info on the throttle body idea do a search for tim_s he built a 2.1 M42 and put M3 throttlebody on it, they might have been e36 though
