Hi all,

i'm looking at F/I for my 335i but not sure which turbo would be best, my mate that does drag racing has said a T40E HYBRID TURBO would be best. The thing im confused at is the hot a/r and the cold a/r, what would be best for the engine.

what bhp will the stock internals take before it goes bang??

cheers for any help

Best speal to Toby Unna with his 335i turbo!

He's seen around 325rwhp already at 7psi and he's not blown his up as yet!

Things to remember, the compressor/turbine wheel sizes determine how much air they flow and the A/R's determine how the turbo works, i.e. small a/r quick spool early power and big a/r late spool big power top end.

There's much more to it than that but it's enough to start with.

HTH, Mark.

i reckon 1 bar ought to be ok. the later m30 is only 9:1 comp as standard. mine got a proper caning before i put the turbo on and has been spot on since touch wood :D

my turbo is a t04e, (whatever that means), bought it purely because it was big and cheap. it seems to work pretty well on 7psi and i'm sure it's big enough to run at a bar which should see 400+ crank bhp.

can fully recommend turboing this engine, it makes a very quick car

Hi toby,

your cars looking the nuts mate.

i've been looking at using a holset h1c 18cm^2 turbo

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 96215&rd=1

what do you think about thease turbos??

what diff/lsd are you using now mate with the turbo on?

i've been talking to a mate of mine who works on bmw's about diff ratio for mine and he's said he can change my 3.73-1 diff to a 2.93-1 ratio diff for just £100.

he's got loads of ring and pinion sets sat in a cupboard in his garage,
he's also got some 3.15-1, 3.25-1 and so on.bloody loads of e36 m3 units most with slippers in them.

what ratio wdo you think would be right? going from your car. not to bothered about silly 0-60 times.

cheers

andy.

I've got a H1C 18cm^2. They're supposed to be good for around 450bhp.

Would hold out for a brand new one though, mine cost me £200 so it's possibly not economical to buy second hand unless it's really cheap.

do you reckon he has a 3.46 ring and pinion that he would part with?

cheers gall, i have a 3.91 LSD at the moment which i was thinking of rebuilding and changing the ratios on so i would be interested in anything he has with around a 3.46 ratio. the ratios from an open diff can be fitted to my LSD while i'm rebuilding it and messing with the ramp angles etc so that would be the ideal.

Hey Gall,
How's it going? :)

I bought mine from good ol' ebay.co.uk just before Christmas. Keep an eye out as they come up from time to time :)

It's one of the ones I'm going to use for twin-turbo setup mark II. I'm using a pair of little T25 turbos from a Skyline at the moment :)

Cheers!

there is 8 brand new H1C's on ebay for $400 and $90 delivery right now thats about £250, cant go wrong with one of them on an M30, Also I think XS power stuff is ok if you not using really high boost dont listen to the 3 year old posts about housings breaking in half and bearings collapsing, the housing was a one off display only turbo with glued housing where its meant to be welded and the ones which have collapsed bearings wont be anything to do with the turbo itself in most cases, lots of people have use these turbos with good results, for example a guy on e30tech made 350 bhp with mostly SSautocrome parts about 2 years ago and tobys had no problems with his and there are lots of JDM guys that have had good results aswell. But for the price these H1C's are you are much better off with a holset.

I'm with Will on the XS/SSautochrome thing. Mine looks fine and works fine, but you have no idea how good the wheels are (materials etc), how good the bearings etc. I only bought it because it was going very cheap (someone had already imported it to the UK and payed the post/duty etc, then changed plans.)

i certainly wouldn't use something like this on a nice rebuilt engine, for fear of it breaking and taking the engine with it

on a £100 lump, however, i'm happy to risk it :D

Toby,

What diff are you using now with your turbo set up mate?

whats the 0-60 / top end like?

as before, what ratio do ya think i should go for?

2.93 / 3.15 / 3.25

he's got slipper units lying around so i can upgrade when funds allow.

Gareth,

He said he dosen't have any 3.64 ratio ring and pinion sets at the mo, he'll keep an eye for me though.

Gall - mine's a 3.08 and i think it's perfect with the standard 535i gearbox. my car is strong from 3000rpm upwards so shot gears would be of no benefit.

however this (open) diff is from an e28 525e and i'm told the normal e30 LSD clutch packs don't go on this particular diff :?

Hi Toby,

Yeah thats the same as the 2.93 ratio diff. you can get lsd units to fit but there hard to get hold of and expensive!!

I might go for the 3.15 ratio then as that takes the standard e30 lsd unit.

just trying to get a free turbo from a truck thats been broke for spares at work, not sure what make/size it is yet but it'll be free anyway.
