Anything's possible... it's hardly gonna bolt/plug straight in though!

The layout of a 740 is pretty similar to an e30 I assume 940's are pretty similar. There is loads of room around a 2litre 4 pot engine in a 740 so I recon a 325i would fit, even though it would be longer.

i would have though a 335 engine would be better though.... a 960 probably would kill a 2.5 m20 as its so heavy.

the engine leans to the right at a similar angle, which will help i guess, and it wouldn't take much to get it wired in and running.

pretty random idea though :D

not much gain for the work required i'd say - custom mounts, exhaust propshaft etc

don't volvo do turbocharged 2.3's for these? if so, it would be a load easier!

Like Matt said theres tonnes of room in a 940, front mounted in the normal place or rear mounted in the estate. On a more serious note you could fit a lorry engine up front which they did in the 740 diesel it was a modded VAG Audi MAN lorry (engine straight 6), finally the 3litre 960 developed 204bhp normally aspirated straight six. Just off to hang my anorak up under the stairs Matts dad :D

back in the 80s my old man had a Volvo 760 GLE Estate which had the 2.8l V6. It was horribly slow, and there was no manual option. Couldn't pull a mini let alone a barge up the Thames!

Then he bought a 760 Turbo (2.3 Turbo 4 pot) which was much better. 186bhp and 240lb/ft iirc. It had a manual 4 speed with an overdrive 5th you got by pressing a button on the top of the stick. I actually got to drive it on an airfield when I was about 18.. horrible wallowy undeersteer. But it wrote off a Nissan Micra for the cost of a cracked (still waterproof) left front indicator.

I wish he'd bought a 325i Touring instead.. he could have given it to me! They were about the same price at the time, but the Volvo was bigger and had leather, aircon, alloys etc as standard.

He he, we used to have a 260GLE which had an odd-fire 2.7 version of the same engine. It was rough as nails (as were the 2.8s as I recall) Had a manual transmission with overdrive (I miss overdrive!)

We transplanted the engine into a bright yellow 240 and that was one of my first cars.

Felt quick enough to me back in the day, and of course I drove a 2.7 when everyone else had 1.4s max :D

Was an awesome car for going sideways in, very forgiving for a young over confident pleb such as myself :)

Well the 760s were heavy old barges and I don't think the slushbox did it any favours. A transplant to a 240 sounds like it would have been a real laugh :)
