335i Turbo Shopping List
Moderator: martauto
Thinking of a turbo now for my M30 converted E30. Thought it would be helpful to me and others to get a shopping list of the needed components from others who have done it. Any advice?

I'm keen to see the replies to this one too!
I want POWER!

Shouldn't really be any different to the bits you need for any other engine to be honest.
You need either a manifold to mount the turbo on which either you might be able to buy or you'll need to make it.
An intercooler and the Volvo ones seem popular as they fit neatly.
An oil supply and return for the turbo
An exhaust system
Charge piping
Engine management.
Gareth from here has a CAD drawing of the M30 exhaust flanges and I'm organising a group buy of various odds and sods like that so if you do wanna make your own manifold then have a look in the post in this section

This could turn into an interesting debate.
Fuzzy's got 292bhp from 2 litres with lots and lots of boost, Toby's got going on 350bhp from 7psi (I think) from his M30......but then Fuzzy's engine is likely to weigh less.........

Pinto (cossie) blocks are pretty heavy and even though it has a cast alloy head, it sure aint a light engine!Turbo-Brown wrote:This could turn into an interesting debate.

Cossies are built for boost! 292 bhp is not masive for this engine and it will go to 350 very reliably! Lots of people are running a solid 400 bhp pretty reliably and if you put it all together nicely and with the correct management and don't mind reasonably regular rebuilds, you can go bigger than this!
I do like the pinto engines!

Quite like the idea of lazy engines with bags of torque myself, but I can see the appeal of the massively tunable Cossie.
Having said that, I can't stand four-bangers! Much prefer the perfectly balancable I6

I know where you are comming from as well as six or even eight cylinders is nice!Turbo-Brown wrote:Quite like the idea of lazy engines with bags of torque myself, but I can see the appeal of the massively tunable Cossie.

I have run 6 pot BMW's as my 'day to day' car for years but I have always had ford engines in my track cars. Ford four cylinder engines when 'properly' put together are good for 9k revs which is very nice! I have had my pinto turbo to rev to just over 7k on the rollers and it actual delivers more BHP all the way up. However, prudence pays and I have a rev limiter set at 6400 and my shift lights encourage me to change just before this
I have recently bought an e30 as I really think these are the new Escort MK1/2's and I am looking forward to attaching a blower. Not had a turbo bmw engine before or indeed a blown six before so new ground for me!

I want the 6 cylinder noise as well!No he wants reliable power :
I have a great deal of respect fo the Ford Cosworth engines but it's just not my thing.
To me the noise is half the fun, and for that I need more than 4 cylinders.
No offence intended!

No offence from me either.Still got a totaly rebuilt early mfi engine from a Xr3i
sitting in mates garage with extensive port work carried out on it.Wrecked my cab before i put it in there.
Great - lets all buy cossie engines and stick them in our e30's!gooner1 wrote:DRIFTBOY wrote:fuzzy wrote: stick a cosworth engine in thenI want the 6 cylinder noise as well!No he wants reliable power :![]()
