little pic to whet your appetites, this is the current A-Tech customer conversion(edit: my customer is XS Performance, owner to be revealed later.. ) should be running this weekend, had hoped to make the dyno day, but better safe than sorry, its not my car

Cr is 7.43:1, turbo is good for 31 psi in current trim spec, management and injectors are sized accordingly

MS management, hybrid T34 turbo( spec is secret ) 42# injectors and for a change, no dump valve 8) wasted spark has also been employed for this setup

We've had to compromise a little to retain the stock( magnex) exhaust system, so again its a 3" downpipe into 3 1/4" collector thats split into 2x 2" then onto the remainder of the existing exhaust, should be quite a nice sound when completed

Cheers :thumb:

I must say that engine bay looks pretty mean

However, the tech. speak is almost wasted on me as you know I'm not a technically minded guy.

Sounds impressive anyway :D

What car is this in and how fast will she go?

i was thinking that, you need the dump valve not just for showing off value so people wonder whats in it but doesnt it also help the turbo to spool up quicker when lifting off then puting the foot down again?winkeye and at the risk of looking silly, whats wasted spark?

wasted in this case is ridding of distributor and rotor arm and use a 6 cyl ignition coil (vx omega etc)and think 2 plugs are fired at a time instead of the original 1 fire dizzy setup..

Ant are you getting at it is a recirc blow off instead of dumping to atmosphere or something....

what manifold is it looks low tubby placement...

Guys, these pics do not do any justice to the conversion at all.

I went to Ant's yesterday and had a good look at this conversion - it is so nicely done and looks fantastic.

I will be over there next week and will take a decent few shots with a good camera.

I can't wait until it's up and mapped, from the last experience I had in a 325i baur with a much smaller turbo the this one is going to be a real beasty.

t34 capable of up to 31 psi would be similar spec to mine which is a stage 2 with cut back blades and a 360 degree bearing and in my application is good for around 400bhp 8)

I can't see this having any lag at all really, it should boost fully by 2.5k and hold till redline. The turbo is a custom spec that should suit the M20B25 perfectly.

Hopefully Ant will be along to update us later with some good news!

I have one thing to say..........

FAST !

more mapping to do but, spools @ 2.7K boost rushes in hard from 3.4K, peak boost is well beyond peak torque so I'd say the hybrid is perfect for the job

more on this later on :D

i dunno... that turbo looks small from the pic (might be just the perspective of the pic). how big is exhaust housing ? if it is 12cm^2 then you will run into problems beyond 400hp... if course you can keep increase boost.... but that will be just driving EGT's sky high and hardly making any extra power, as you will need to retard timing to prevent detonation...

amount of boost is nothing... good setup should generate large power of moderate amount of boost... to make engine boost efficient at 30 psi you need to so some serious sacrifices on the bottom and mid range...

just my $0.02

never the less, i'm still interested how it all worked out :)

OK, mini update , I'm running this for the time being before handing back to the rightful owner.

Fuel consuption is good TBH, averaging 22 mpg ( calc no OBC B.S  ) thats mixed town/country/caning driving

Oil consumption has been zero, as has coolant

Running just under a BAR of boost now( 14.1 psi), no det, no overheating, docile as stock in traffic, with al the extra bark you could want, with plenty more in reserve, had a scooby on the bypass coming out of T/wells tonight, he tried but failed to keep up

@ Mops: the turbo is mostly hidden, the hotside is the biggest housing avail in garret with a T3 footprint, this was ported out and flowed to the wastgate for all the reasons you've outlined above, dont forget , this is a road car for UK use, so compromises were made in order to neagte lag, its still there a little but once spooling you'd forget all about it dude.

Again, the Turbo was custom made for the M20B25, the CR drop is working very well, its reduced the hand of god torque , and replaced it with a mighty kick in the arse when the boost chimes in.

Dyno this week, more testing tomorrow then its on the rollers, and time to get on with the next one

thanks for update ant... still i think t3 exhaust housing will be restricting on that engine on 31 psi.... as is the fact that it works well and spools quick to 14 psi... therefore i think it will be ok up to something like 20 psi, then exhaust back pressure will become a major pain (that wont stop you form increasing boost, but that wont be making more power )...

so what is the power band like ? when does it spool on 2nd gear ? on 4th gear ?

i think you soo want holset hx40 in there...

The T3 is a customers car, it's such a nice conversion, looks so nice and goes well enough to abuse a brand new scooby

cost allowing, custom or machined pistons M8, but a decomp plate does work well, as do MLS H/Gaskets

Depends on whether its a bolt on affair ( good bottom end ) or rebuild and Turbo as per this project dude

HTH

@ Mops, the T3 was an 0.63A/R housing before the alterations, the housing and core are the only T-3 series components remaining dude.

STAGE ONE:
Ok so I was lucky enough to drive this car. What do I know about turbos? Nothing. But I had been driven around by Ant in his own turbo setup in his red 325i and I absolutely loved that. It had smooth immediately available power and no turbo lag.

I was really looking forward to driving this latest conversion although I was a bit worried. Firstly I was scared because the suspension on this car seemed too low and the dirt road track entry at Ant's is very bumpy. Secondly the brakes weren't of high spec (yet) and the ABS didn't work. I had butterflies of excitement (I don't get out that much) and I threw my wind to the caution and drove off.

I really didn't want to see signs like 'CAUTION MUD ON ROAD' but there were posted all over these country lanes. Anyway I tootled along until I got used to the car a bit and then let her rip up the A21. This turbo set up is an absolute weapon, especially for motorway driving. It is so much fun! The car's power builds and peaks and there is a lovely rich, beefy surge as you fluently pass whatever other cars are on the road while on a mission to explore more gears and more power. I wanted to jump into the future E30 style and I suppose in a way I had.

Care is required on country lanes covered in mud. But for fast open road driving this car is a monster. I'd love to go on a long motorway jaunt in this thing.

STAGE TWO:
The turbo:
The second drive a month later and the car is even better. Now the car has had more refinement made to the mapping - thanks to that megasquirt gadget - the power comes in really controllable and smoothly. It doesn't feel like it's going to whip the car away sideways and really delivers the torque well. I could have the thing sideways as there is so much power but I can't be doing with all that - I just like going fast in the right direction. It was easy to drive and speed about the way I wanted to. I really didn't want to give this car back to Ant. It is proper fun everywhere you go.

The suspension and other bits on the car are now mostly sorted which makes it a much more rewarding safer drive. Even on wet country lanes I didn't feel worried about giving it a little bit of stick but I was fairly cautious. I didn't go mad with it as it wasn't my car. I could easily tell that giving this car more throttle and it would be sensationally fast.

The brakes:
These brakes are just brilliant. They are a conversion based on the stuff available from the German website http://www.300mm.de/new/ although not sure exactly which bits were used. They felt progressive and had much more 'feel' than the standard brakes. You can tell exactly what is happening with the car when you press that brake pedal.

I'll give you an example; turning off a main road and going downhill on a country which has a very sharp right turn. Normally my heart would be in my mouth a little bit until I could see how much the car was slowing down. But with these brakes I could feel exactly how much pressure to apply.

The brakes were not just an 'on/off' switch - which is how normal E30 brakes feel in comparison. These are a fantastic upgrade and pads and discs are easily available to maintain the upgrade once it has modified. This is a must have for anyone who loves driving.
