Hi,

i did a quick search on turbocharging M10 but i didnt find much. So i hope all you guys with turbo M10 will share your knowledge in this thread.

Whats actualy needed to turbocharge an M10. My goal is reliable, 300hp engine that will be used in my road car that i also use for drifting. I would also like to avoid parts from M cars because they are very hard to get here and expensive.

Engine block.
Are M10 blocks all the same. I have a few 1600ccm, 75hp engines at home (carb, not sold in E30 in UK market but i think they are the same as in E21). Is this a good base for a project.

Cylinder head.
How good is stock head ? My goal is around 300hp. What head is best to use for this kind of power.

Pistons.
I read somewhere that you can use forged pistons for VW bug. Is this true. If so i think its a good option, because they are cheap. If not what pistons are good. Stock pistons probably wont be strong enough for 300hp and fairly high boost.

Crankshaft and conrods.
Whats a good option. I think that E21 320 (4 cyl.) had forged crankshaft. What conrods can i use for this kind of power ?

Intake.
Stock intake is probably too small. What TB can i stick to M10 intake manifold. I have a few M50B25 TBs at home, can i make an adapter to fit that or something ?

Exhaust manifold.
Can i use some stock bmw part from a some turbodiesel or something ? If not i think i can make a "log" exhaust manifold. Doesnt look too complicated and is probably cheap. How much power can these manifolds take on 4 cyl. engine ?

Turbo.
Whats the cheapest and most common turbo that can handle 300hp ? Is there enough place for a turbo on LHD cars ?

Fueling.
Can i use Greddy eManage ? I can get one cheap from a friend. If not, what do i use. I will probably need something not too expensive and not to complicated.

Fuel pump wont be a problem, ill probably order a Walbro 255l/h from ebay, but what about injectors. Is any stock bmw item big enough for 300hp on 4 cyl. ?

Gearbox.
Will a gearbox from E36 325 fit on M10 ? I didnt try but it looks like it should go on and IIRC they are good for 300+ hp. If not, what do i use.

I hope this is not too long :) Thanks for answers.

To answer a couple more Qs LHD will be better as the steering goes down the other side to the manifold. And for fueling spark etc go megasquirt (MS) ant is the man for this as i previously stated

That would be really cool :)

maxfield, i know M10 blocks are very strong, but i dont have the budget to go for that kind of power.

m-dtech, did you do any research yet ? If so feel free to share your findings :)

I was just stating M10 blocks are very strong and will easily handle your power. I read that the blocks are at the best around 80k

Do you know if all the blocks are the same ? Will my 1.6 be good for this project or will i need a 1.8 or maybe 2.0 ?

looking to get a hold of a turbo manifold from an e21 or 2002. either that or i will make a log type my self.

intake im thinking of using jenvey tbs.

fuel/spark would need to be via megasquirt or something similar.

the rest is time and patience !

Your going to need to do

standalone
bigger injectors ( no less then 450ccԚ´s)
a T4/T3 hybrid will do 350hp
"3 exhaust
a higher cam will make more power up top
big intercooler,
rest is general turbo stuff
you can use a stock 318i E30 engine (best head)
and if you get a mls gasket and better headbolt stock stuff will make that much power,
With great challenges comes great engineering.

HI

A load of e21 have been turbod in the states, so try bimmer fourms a later block is a few kg's lighter, the e21 & 02 cranks were forged, but the s14 crank fits. The vw pistons are cheap for forged but you need to bore the block out.

Don't wast mony on a shrick cam as a cutom turbo profile is cheaper, you would also want a forged rockers.

if you going to do turbo
just get a standalone and ditch the carbs.

Always upgrade the engine management when doing turbo

A stock 4x4 cossie t3 will just about be good enough for 300 bhp and can be had for a ton on eay.
