M10 318I Engine Into A M10 316 (carb) Car

Hi ive got a 316 (M10 Carb Version) and im wanting to put my spare 318I M10 Engine into it, is it an easy job, has anyone done this before, do you also need a new fuel pump as i think that they are in different places?????

assuming you are ditching the injection dude ?

if so, you;ll need to swop the pump from the 1.6 to the 1.8, there is provision for it still just its balnked off with a plate, remove and all will become clear.

M10s rule, damn good engines !

Dont throw the injection stuff away though ! anyone with a 2002Tii with knackered MFI will bite your arm off for the EFI setup.

im want to keep the injection system so the engine will be exactly the same as a 318i

whats wrong with the 316?

The actual engines are very similar both are 1766cc I think they have the same bottom ends.

If its the carb that is gone wrong, then you might as well just swap the injection stuff over. I'm not sure but I think the cyclinder head may be different (to allow provision for injectors) but its easier to swap heads over than the whole engine imo.

318i m10 is a good engine really missed mine when i was driving m40s...

Hi im restoring an old 316 but ive got a spare car with the 318i engine in and the one in my 316 sounds a bit crap and also hunts and does not warm up properly, so if its easy to put the 318i engine in i will do that as its perfect

i will swap everything injectors the lot but i think fuel pumps are slightly different and will need the petrol tanks swoping over

The 316 carbs are 1.8 anyway

Get some twin carbs on the 316 carband it will be a lot better than a 1.8 i

This is a very interesting topic, ive bought a little 316, but often wondered about once i get too attached whether i'll end up forking out for more power.


if twin cars are at a decent price, i would sell your spare block and invest in a set of them!

ummm interesting but i think id rather still have the injected engine the parts are easyer to get also i would rather have injectors.

Its an easy swap to do mate, ive done it before, I managed to get a whole 318i for £50! So it would be wrong not too

I think it said in the e30 restoration book i have that the fuel pumps are different is that true.

Fuel pumps are different, you will need an elec pump for the i engine.
I fitted one in the existing tank and just added a return. But if you have the tank and it is in good nick then you should fitt it

Just curious if you were close, as i may have taken your poor running m10 off your hands, and given it some forced air over the summer, but alas you are not

No i think im going to do the swop this summer (hopefully) its a great 318i engine in the car, not tappety no black smoke ect, body work on the 318i car tho is dreadfull arches have rusted so much you can see inside thro them, i got the car as it had great engine and unmarked grey leather interior.

The swap is easy to 318i but i had a 316 carb just put on a twin choke webber carb and it was so much quicker, whoud have any 318i.

It easily kept up with my mates 320i but thats not saying much really!

I wanted to get twin carbs but never got round to it. Loads of companies do manifolds for M10's to take twin carbs be cause the 2000 series bms had this engine and twin carbs is a popular mod on them.

You can pick up a webber carb for ur M10 off ebay really cheap if you keep you eyes open.

All this talk of M10's is making me miss mine it was so good.

Check out the webber website for new prices, think they also do the manifolds to take twin carbs.

Thats true, but they run like a bag of shite till warmed up properly and use twice as much fuel

Good point it was a bit thirsty, more so than my current 325i actually.

Still i think it was a lot more fun to drive. When i could afford to put petrol in! LOL
