ahh quality stuff, Jon Volk is the fabricator and is a member on here, I believe that the same adapter is used but either comes shipped with the external gate flange plated shut or open depending on application.
nice welds though, Tig baby, superb !

Theres plenty of room under the bonnet
The picture next to the internal wastegate adapter is the same as the external just because no one ,untill recently, had ordered one configured like that. I will be udating it with wastegate-less pictures later today.
Im not sure if they will clear a right hand drive application as of yet so if anyone is wondering, I dont think I could give you a definate answer on that at this point.
Cheers.

looks good to me! any plans for a M30 one?
does this make the exhaust stud snapping problem worse?

Nice work Jon, I have never been a big fan of "adaptors" on stock manifolds, but yours look like a good quality piece. Obviously a set of good quality studs and lock nuts in the head and on the flange would be a must as well as a turbo support (as on any turbo) but this looks like a very good cost effective way of getting a turbo on an E30 to me.Usually stud snapping is caused by the manifold having excessive loads on it, such as a knackered front exhaust mount (or none!) and same goes for turbo engines, hence the need for a turbo support and a good exhaust mounting system that doesn't put loads on the manifolds.

the stud snapping is really a design problem on bmw's part. the large single piece manifold expands more than the head with the large amount of heat present. this puts excessive load on the end studs and snaps them.
the 320i 2 piece manifold should be better but it's a smaller bore...
i just thought the huge heat buildup in the turbo manifold may exhaggerate this problem...
that said, i've not heard of turbo setups being problematic in this area.

Aaahh, of course, I was thinking you were referring to the studs on the downpipes, I stand corrected! I remember this happening on a firends 325i rally car on number 6 cylinder. On the Cosworth YB turbo engine, they run a cast manifold, and although admittedly only four cylinders long, they overcome this problem by having the no. 2 cylinder drilled on-size to the head studs, then no.1,3 and 4 are all oversized holes, and fitted with thick washers, SS locknuts and a composite gaket that allows lateral movement. That said, if the turbo damper (support) is not setup correctly or stuffed, or the exhaust is putting weight on the manifold, they tend to break studs too, or in some cases the whole manifold can break in two!
