M30 oil temp sender?

is the sender on the bottom of my M30B35 (E32) sump a oil temp sender? will it be connected to anything on the car (ECU?) or can it be connected up to a gauge?

or is it a low level float?

(can you tell i've not taken the sump off!!!)
