Im currently fitting an E36 M44 engine to my touring, but my external hard drive has crashed and taken all my wiring diagrams with it
So I could do with some help....

Firstly, do the pin changes in the pic below seem right? (Im 99% sure the M44 X20 pinout is the same as the M52 X20 pinout, so I worked my way through the Wiki pages)

Secondly, theres a couple pins Im not sure on... Pins 12, 14 and 16 of the C101 (coloured red). These are connected for an M50 conversion, but according to the Wiki they are not used for an M52 - is that right?

I also have to find a feed for the ABS, but from memory I pick that up from a collection of red/white wires in the main engine loom??

Cheers

I would not couple the EWS to the ECU via X20/C101, I would just put the EWS on top of the ECU and take the connection directly from the ECU pin 10 (SW/VI) to the EWS pin 4 (GN).
That was my plan, I was just adding the wires to the chart so I didnt forget them! There does seem to be some wire colour differences on the X20 between 4 and 6 cyl cars - the pin7 on my X20 is green, but does go to ECU pin10, I,ve already traced the wire back to the ECU plug.
Ive not looked at the EWS properly yet... This is a late M44 (from a '99 Compact) and so has EWS 3D, not EWS2. It seems the wire colours are the same, but the pin numbers differ and the antenna ring is wired directly to the EWS module.
willnz wrote:Temp sensor wires go to pins 11 & 12 on the X20 plug, you can use either to feed pin4 on C101 to operate the temp gauge. You will need to replace the sender on the motor for an e30 one as the gauge will not work using the M44 one.
Im leaving the temp sender wiring in place so the ECU gets its readings.
As you say, the M44 sensor wont work the E30 gauge, but there isnt an easily suitable place to add the E30 brown sender. For the meantime, Ive got an in-hose adaptor to take the E30 sender and have popped it into the top hose. Ive added an earth from the sender and will run a wire to pin4 of the C101.
willnz wrote:pin 12 C101 is not normally used as it is the engine check light, but you can connect it to pin8 from the M44 ECU and see if it works. I have not tried to connect the check light in any of my conversions but could be useful.
I think I connected this on my S50 conversion, but without my wiring diagrams, Im not sure. I'll give it a go on this one if I rememeber lol
willnz wrote:pin 14 C101 can be used if you have a cruise control.
Ah yes, I rememeber that from my S50... on which I never did finish fitting cruise!
willnz wrote:Pin 16 C101 is used only if you have an airbag (SRS) so leave unconnected.
Is this a diagnostic connection to the diag plug? I could use this for the EWS diag connection?? - pin2 white/violet on EWS2.

willnz wrote:Pin 20 can be used for the ABS supply IF it has the red/yellow wire connected to it, but check this as it can also be a ground (brown wire).
Yup, car has ABS so has the red/yellow wire on the body side of the C101. I just need to find somewhere to get the feed from the engine loom. From memory, on my S50 conversion I spliced into a bunch of red/white wires in the main engine loom - does that sound right for M52 wiring?

Thanks for the help, its much appreciated :thumb:
