As above.
My brother has a WRX ( back in Oz) that suffers from piston slap when cold. But goes when warm. How/What/why and can it be cured on an m20b27???

piston slap in my m20 was caused by a seized piston ring, and damaged the bore so much that it needed a rebore
typically however, slap is caused by improper fit of the piston in the cylinder bore. the piston is usuaaly too small or the bore is too large (i think),

I Think Piston slap is excesive bore wear. To much play between the pistons and bore wall causing the piston to "slap" around.......
EDIT: damm, he beat me to it

bore wear = not good dude!
try a compression test on all cylinders when engine is cold and warm

Forged pistons can cause piston slap when cold also. They expand more than cast parts, so typically cut slightly smaller than forged pistons (I think...!?)
