I realise this isn´t maybe something you guys are so into, but I was wondering about the interchangeability of the newer four cylinder motors, into e30s in general and my 318iS in particular. Particularly the new TwinPower turbo N20 unit, but also the N43. They´re light and would give a decent increase in power - 245hp from the most powerful version. Are the electronics something that could be dealt with? Engine/gearbox mounts likely to be similar, being as they´re both four cylinder units? Anyone done it, or have any thoughts?

cheers

Electronics would be a nightmare! These engines require inputs from all over the car, via the canbus, and most of the signals either don't exist on an E30, or are incompatible.
I've no evidence to support it, but I wouldn't be surprised if physically fitting the engine into the bay is quite easy. Getting it to run will be the hard part.
Anything's possible with enough time and effort though!

Thats kind of what I was afraid of. I get a headache just looking at the wiring that´s in the car now!

Would standalone engine management be feasible?

It would be, but would be expensive and hard to get running like a standard car.

Best bet would be flashing the ecu so that it doesn't look for all the sensors. Don't know if anyone does that yet though

You can get the M54s running on the standard ECU, I can't see the newer engines being an awful lot harder.
Half thinking of using an N47 in my Touring.

If you aren't upto the wiring you can get the ECU reflashed on anything upto the V10 however but getting it done by these lads on an N43 etc might not be viable for what your getting in return as you'd have a seriously capable M42 for the money of buying the engine, messing around getting it to fit and then sorting the wiring issues.
M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream
