E36 328 Rad question

Just wanted to check, the rad I've got in mine is a Nissens one and it just has one level mark about 1/2 way up the end tank.

Is that a max or a min or what?

It's the 'max' or correct level for a cold engine. I.E., the level to which you should fill it.
A lot of BMWs seem to settle about 1/2" lower than this, and this is fine as long as it doesn't continue dropping.
