First start today, just exhaust from manifold back and its ready for Mot tax and hopefully the BDC!

I apologise for my photos and my writing!

Started out with a E30 318 Touring, for me any E30 would do aslong as it was rust free.

So I managed to find this one, its Red :D , no sunroof, and best of all mint

I stuck a M50 in a while ago and used it as my daily runner, but now its being turned into my competition drift/race car.
Image

So first thing was to strip out the engine bay, abs, brake servo, washer fluid bottle and alarm system. Not much as I had taken alot more out when I did the M50 conversion.
Image

Whilst the engine bay was free I replaced the steering rack for a E36 setup as the E30 one is useless, and also fitted a E36 M3 Evo suspension and brakes. Im just waiting for my front coilovers to arrive and Spax coilover units for the rear.
The rear set up is fully polybushed unit from a compact with a 3.38 med case welded diff. Welded because I prefer them they dont open up off power. Alot of people disagree!

Image

For the moment its running mismatched wheels, i am just waiting for a set of 17x8/9 Rota Grids in bmw fitment to arrive.

Engine wise, I bought a E34 540 Manual as a doner car, swapped the gearbox for a 530 5 speed unit (I prefer the ratios) and have bought a billet machined lightweight flywheel and helix have supplied a 5 puk clutch that can handle 600nm of torque, perfect for fourth gear clutch kicking!!
The engine has had a light breath of health with new gaskets, fluid changes and a general service along with a new maf.

That is as far as we have got for the moment! Although today the engine is fitted in with E30.de mounts and I am using Bmw X5 4.4 V8 manifolds

This is how I will work my setup, bearing mind this is someone elses car and they are using a skyline servo :?

but you get the idea, I may shorten the linkage and bring the servo into the middle of the dash, so I can then remove the panel in the centre console to gain access, and the bracket will be different!

Christmas relax over, so this is how it stands atm

Still waiting for the front coilovers to arrive, however put my 5x120 rota grids on, wanted more width but couldnt find any, so there 8.5 f and 9 rears, little bit of arch work was needed mainly because of the suspension, anyhow big spacers will be going on to give it more width look. Plus they have stupid gay big sidewalls!

Update on manifolds,

using x5 manifolds are a great help on the drivers side, not so much on the passenger, basically on the passenger side they fire straight into the starter motor, however the standerd e34 manifolds can be modified easily enough to loop down.

Nice build, might go M60 myself.

What are the other options other than using spacers to lower the subframe?

We used the spacers to lower the whole lot, just to give a little more clearence round the steering coloum, and also to give more clearance in the box tunnel,

just makes it a cleaner job!

So it's not because it catches on the bonnet or anything like that then?

What ratio diff you going to use?

no, it should be clear of the crossmember and not hit the bonnet,
without spacers

Thanks, I tried every manifold there was, but not an e32, interesting to try one on the next one, its annoying as everything else can be sorted on the conversion quite simply and in various ways however the manifolds are a pain and most of the v8 conversions you can find are mostly left hand drive!

Thanks very much, ignore the top mount positioning for now, there just 'in' for the moment, until I pick up some adjustable mounts

So brought the car home last night, two days to spare before I drive up to Silverstone in it!

Its crazy fast, I know there will be quicker things out there but the cars weighs sub 1000kg - cant be fully accurate till later in the week - and the V8 is one of the best iv driven from a 540

A little snip

Thanks guys, however yesterday pinged a driveshaft I think the cv was dodgey from the beginning, thats an easy fix.

However one problem is a pipe that needs to be changed, the jubilee is just rubbing enough on it when the engine rotates to slice it and cause a leak.

Easy fix although i need mini hands as its at the back of the block lower heater matrix!
Just good to find the teething problems!

Heyho only got to get to silverstone tonight with it! 8O There will be photos and videos over the weekend of it running

Regards to driving, in the dry 2nd gear itll light up and in the wet 3rd will spin with any throttle so its seriously fun, handling is amazing thanks to RPM topmounts and E36 M3 Evo suspension & brake set ups

Its running a 3.38 diff at the moment so itll top out around 140mph ish, the accerleration is relentless and brutal!

Theo - No cage just yet, however a full turrets/diff mount weld in cage is going to be fitted soon in the next few months

I cant again say how amazing the job Robin Welsh at Rawmotorsport has done with this car, on such a short time scale given the mess up by a company we were using for the flywheel.

Rawmotorsport are now going to be creating these conversions and can work on a very quick time scale!
