I know, not exactly exciting! But the M43 is so much better than an M40 - I reckon it'd make a properly good li'l daily runner in an E30 touring...

So go on, why not?

Mine has indeed had a head gasket... but it's done a few miles now! & is still sweet... well as sweet as a boggo 4-pot is going to be anyway.

Prob not worth the hassle, but if it was an easy swap, it'd be so much better than a standard m40'd snotter, without pretending to be quick!

Otherwise an m50 would be the obvious choice I guess :) But then neither of my cars would be cheap to insure etc etc...!

As said keeping it as a 4 pot then think M44 would be my choice.About 140 brake which would still be pretty lively in an E30.
Could be a very easy swap if an M42 harness and ECU would fit?

You can run the M44 on OBD1 but it seems a bit too much of a faff to make it worth while over an M42?

I swear someone on here time ago had an M43B19tu (or whatever it's called) in an E30. It was a silver 2 door IIRC.

Ive got an M44 here and was tempted to put it in the Touring ive got.
M52 won the argument though.

Sounds dangerously close to an iS! 8O

Idle thoughts at the mo TBH - the E36 touring is doing the job (in a very dull way) just fine at the mo.
Perhaps when I've got such minor things as a wedding next year out of the way, I'll find someone to dump something in a nice solid touring for me as a treat.

I keep popping the bonnet on my dad's E46 and thinkin' that the 140bhp 4 pot would make a nice little runner for 'er indoors in a solid touring....

Things that spring to mind immediately include sump(M40 or M42?)engine harness(M42 again?)and of course the good old exhaust v steering coupling clearance issues.

Point is,that apart from changing the engine oil every now and then, the thing is almost maintainance free!
