E36 M42 crank

Just taken the sump off of my spare M42. My plan is to remove the crank and fit it to an M44 engine to lower the CR for my F/I build and I had a thought, the M42 in question is a late E36 M42 ('95 iirc).

The E30 M42 crank was forged. I know the M44 crank isn't but I'm not sure about the pre '95 E36 M42 engines?

I've cross checked the part numbers on BMWfans, they only list it as a crank complete with shells so it's a little hard to know but the E30 M42 and pre '95 E36 M42 have the same part numbers for the set but they don't show a number for the crank it's self. Part number on the crank is 1721 840.

What head is on the e36 M42 rich? is it a 6mm valve stem one??? i need a spare and have three to swop???

Tim may know better than me but as far as i was aware an e36 m42 is an e30 m42 in a different shell.

I'm pretty certain the M42's have forged cranks in both E30 and E36 guises.

Matt I'll check, so I just need to measure the stem of the valve? I would do it now but not at the house with the garage. I'll measure it tomorrow for you and let you know P.S. what time you getting to Basall Common?

ok cheers rich, ya its just the stem there either 6mm or 7mm.

we're all coming streight from work but are leaving alittle early so hope to be there fpr 5.30-6ish then a shower, get changed and in the bar for 7ish
