Hi,
This is the Michi Besler E30 M3 S62 engined car.
His Free practice lap of Spa, granted
on full slicks, is circa 2.35/40 .
[Old Bus Stop layout]
If you ever get to go around Spa
in under 2.50 you will appreciate how
quick this car really is.
Inspiration for the S62 Conversion crowd.
Regards,
The Gorilla.

Hi,
Kos- Not so much ideas but did consider
a E30-V8 a while back.
The main issues as I understand it are as
follows-
Sump fouling the cross member which to me
would mean Dry Sump, as lowering the sub-frame
might get the lump in, but restoring the handling
with 245 Kg's up front, will take some work and
know how.
This then throws up the next issue, as the S62
Block with a lateral G Sensor that opens up faster
oil way returns, via magnetic valves to return the
oil to the sump quicker, under heavy cornering,
which needs to be considered for a] oil scavange from
the dry sump, and, b] oil windage, causing oil
drag on the Crank.
The reason why this is so important is that the
S62 runs hydraulic lifters, and the old type 100 bar
oil pressurised Vanos.
Oil Starvation has killed more than one S62 in its time.
The oil starvation is accelarated under heavy cornering
due the 45 degree angle of the 2 - 4 pot banks.
Hence why most of the converted Race E30'S running
S62 lumps, delete the Vanos, fit 4/5 stage dry sump,
and use an auxillairy feed from the dry sump pump
to feed the Cams/liffters etc. Bit like USA V8's.
The other engine to consider for this would be to use the
M62 B46 V8 as used by the 4.6is X5 and Alpina,
and up the stroke from 82.7mm to 89mm by using
the S62 [m5] Crank.
A Stroked M62 B46 engine would be almost S62
performance but without a lot of the issues.
BMW talked down the performance of this engine
at the time as it was getting very close to S62
performance.
The new M3 V8 S65 would be nice, but not sure
about its Torque capabilities, as tuned S54 are making
the same Torque numbers as the S65.
Just ideas though.
Regards,
The Gorilla.

phil crouch touted this idea to me a while back, as you said almost S62 performance but with lot less issues.
the S62 buy BMW's standards is under powered. while the s50 B32 was almost breaking the magic 100hp per litre mark, the S62 "only" making 80hp per lire, some what under powered. but i suppose the the jump in power over the 3.8 e34 M5's was enough to keep the punters happy.
a simple diff swop on a 4.0 e34 540i or the 4.4's in the 39 540i's from the long 2.9X to say 3.46 or 3.64 makes them an animal to seriously upset the M5's in the same body.
i recall you post in regards to your e39 M5 experiences, did you ever do much in way of tuning work, or did you just leave it to brakes/suspension upgrades and replacing Mafs and vanos units?
there some bold claims of 30 to 40 HP gains to be had from a re map and good manifolds and exhaust systems. they are bold claims but having seen the manifolds i'd dare say there is some room for improvement, but that crammed into an e30's engine bay you'd have to start notching chassis rails
