I'm building an e30 for stage rallying and want to change from the current M40 316i.
I want to remain with a 1600 engine for class reasons for the time being, (a 325 is part of future plans but not at this time).
Does anyone know which alternative BMW 1600 will go in without too many problems?

The main problem is all (iirc) later 316's were really de-tuned 1.8/1.9 engines, if you can find a M10 1.6 that would be about your best option if you do scrap the M40.
