hello, i got my e30 now and done a fair bit on it, will post a project thread later. right now though im after any info regarding putting an m535i engine in her.

i have a couple of questions basically do i 100% need to use the gearbox or can i fabricate a way of using my current gearbox?

if i do need the gearbox from the m535i, do i then have to use the prop and drive shafts etc off it too?

basically wondering how much of the 320 i can keep to save time etc.

thanks

i would have a look at some of the m30 build threads on here theres a few of them. are you using the e28 m535i engine (218 bhp) or the 208bhp e34 lump? as i think it makes a difference as they run on different managment i think and people tend to go for the e34 lump. welcome to the zone there is so much knowlage on hear you will always get the correct answer!

The M535i swap is different i think.

If you are on about the M30 swap (3.5 engine out of E32/E34), then read this:

The E28 M30 will fit but you will need the sump/oil pick up etc from an E34 also theres a coolant elbow at the back of the head that will cause problems,it can be done but its easier to use an engine from an E34/32

Gearbox, you have to use the M30 one or one off an M10 engine

The E28 does have a coolant elbow at the rear, and to be honest. it is a much older m30 engine.
As lee said , you'll need the sump etc of an E34 , so why not go for the E34 engine???
Propshaft is easy, E36 328i prop, reversed centre bearing, or custom prop about £100, e34 front, and e20 rear?

You'll need to change your prop too as the 320 has a small case diff, 6 bolts, and u need a large case, 325i diff.
Best to buy the complete car as everything u need is there.
HTH's

spoke to a local bmw tech today.

m535i engine, why not? its more powerful
gonna use the e34 sump
the front end of the prop can be mated with my prop (been done)
leccy fan
m535 rad and other bits n bobs
custom exhaust etc
brakes etc all be upgraded too

once the ball is rolling i'll post up some pics. we took the engine and gearbox out of the m535 today and stripped it bare. such a long day, but well worth it for the end result imo

wish me luck
