Hi, just wondering if anybody is using a line lock. If so what are the pro's and cons? Cheers Chris

Can't think of any cons
Pro's - better burnouts before a run up the drag strip, if you have an auto it also allows you to hold it just below the stall speed whilst waiting for the lights to change, but keeping your left foot on the brake has the same effect.
For a road car, no point at all

If you are running up the drag strip on road tyres, no point doing a massive burnout either as treaded tyres don't really get sticky from a burnout, just a quick spin up of the rears to clean any crap off is enough IMO

I haven't properly tried yet but i think im going to struggle getting my handbrake cables out. That is the reason i was thinking of a line lock.

You sill need a mechanical handbrake for the mot, a hydraulic system with a line lock won't do.

Leaving handbrakes on etc after a hard couple of laps on the brakes is a bad idea, this is how discs end up warped, especially with a line lock on an e30 as it will hold the pads on the braking surface of the disc, not allowing even cooling (hence the warping), at least the standard handbrake would only hold the handbrake shoes on the bell. You're better leaving the car in gear when stopped to prevent it from rolling
line locks are primarily designed to hold the brakes on one axle so you have two feet to do a burnout or load the drivetrain before a hard launch, using it as a parking brake is a bit like overkill considering there is already a handbrake there.

why would the pads be left on. Surely you would have to take the linelock off to be able to move the car. The handbrake that is currently on my car has been cut to get the rear axle off. The cables are ceased in the car aswell. So how will i be able to use the existing hanbrake?

By replacing the handbrake cables with new, mole grips will help you to remove the remains of the old cables and if they're really stuck then some mild heating may be required from a blowtorch, just don't damage the tubes as they are part of the chassis.
"Why would the pads be left on"?
Well, you said you were removing the handbrake cables so I thought that you were proposing to use the line lock on the rear brakes as a makeshift handbrake on your track car, although until you said it was a track car I thought it was a road car which explains my earlier comment about MOT's.

what are your intentions for the line lock...is it to replace the handbrake, or is it to lock the front half of the circuitdoyley123 wrote:why would the pads be left on.
are you using it to stop the car rolling once you park back up in the paddock when on track days?

i don't use the handbrake then as it this is what can warp discs when they are cooling down after a session
your better off leaving it in gear if you need to stop it from rolling in the paddock.
but otherwise, yes, a line lock will do what you need.
