316i touring to 325i updated whit pics (Finished!)

Hey guys thought i would update this..

what i hopeing to do is drop a 325i engine into my 316i touring..
so far i have got my self a 88 325i auto lump that i am going to change to manual.. that when i ordered was told came whit the loom but when it did come turned out they had cut the loom and the tb had been broken as they tied the rope over it ..

well hear is a few pic's of the good touring and the 325i lump..

my touring so far all thats been done is lowered 60/40 17'' alloys and welded diff lol

as you can see the the engine is in need off a good clean.
i am planning on changing all gaskets -- sensors and belts..
also new water and oil pump and might redo the head whit all new parts while i at it

i will add more pic's as the project go's along

Take the 316i engine out complete with its loom, and fit the 325 engine in complete with its loom attached. The loom only connects to the rest of the car at the large plug (C101) next to the fusebox, the battery + terminal, and the earth stud on the RH suspension turret.

thanks m8 i have read your post its nice to have the heads up i have been looking around and have found a full engine and loom from a 525i just wondering would it be the same as you said just to change the engine and loom and connect it at the plug thanks

Wiring should be the same,check the front of the engine,the water pump and its plumbing arrangement may be different as E34 has a little more room at the front of the engine.

The E34 loom will be electrically the same as the E30 one, but the lengths of various branches, or even the direction they go in, may be different.
Also, later E34s, fitted with M50 engines, used a different engine loom plug and socket with more pins. I don't know if any M20 engined E34s were produced with the later socket, but it's possible.
If the E34 loom doesn't fit, then 2 litre and 2.5 litre M20 E30 looms (except early ones) are identical, if you need to source one.

thanks for the reply guys but looks like i going have hold off on my dream of a 6 pot in the touring for a few days

called up to the scrappy today to see how he was getting on whit the engine for me and cops had the place shut down
turned out they didnt have a licence to scrap cars so i back stuck looking for another one

one of me m8's knows a few fellas that got 325i engines lieing about the yard so he going see if he can get me one for the right price maybe then i will get my dream

so i have started stripping the engine down and turns out i wont have to redo the head after all from what i can see it has had a new head fitted whit all new parts.

when i first got it it looked really run down but from what i can see now the old owner took good care off it

Those look like hex headed cylinder head bolts. It's strongly recommended that you change them, one at a time, for the more modern torx headed stretch bolts.
The hex headed bolts have a habit of breaking where the head of the bolt meets its stem, and the liberated head can get involved with the cam or rockers, with disastrous results.
Renew the sump gasket before you fit the engine, as well.

not too shore rix313 how would i know if it is or not it came outta a 88 auto touring...

hey guys hear's a few pics off what happened this evening got the head off and stripped nearly ready to be sent for skimmed..


this is the first engine i have worked on that the head was in so good off a condition








can any one tell me if that is the way the head comes whit that wee bit polished or has it been polished / ported

will have more pic's and updates as i go along

Is there any welding up engine mounts etc or are they all compatible?
Nice touring I used to have those OZ Wheels on a Golf GTI 16v years ago-nice bit of a shiny lip when polished up.
What part of Ireland are you in mate?

yeah i got them off a m8 he used to have them on his sport

i have polished them up but need be redone again as its been a while

i am just outside dundalk co.louth m8 if ya have been to any off the cruses and diffing ya prob would off seen my yoke at them lol

Ah I used to go to the Dundalk/Newry/Dublin/Waterford cruises all the time but I havnt been to one since 2005 when I got stung by Customs (They took my e30 318is )

But yep Tourings rule I hope the swap is plug & play
Im looking for a e30 at the minute & have similar plans to you lol!

hey guys time for an update i have sorted alot off the parts needed from spadge top fella........all i need now is the loom should be getting it in a week or 2 ... the head has been giving to a m8 to be left for pressure testing and skimming on monday should have it back by end off week then ill be getting the gaskets and belts so i can start getting it put all back together ill get pic's up as i get more done

hey guys any one know what i should do......

the 316 has an lambda sensor and the 325 exhaust that i got does not have the hole to fit one when i put the engine in is there a need for the lambda or is it just the 316 that needed it

also wondering can i use the 316 powersteering pump whit the 325 engine or will i have to get one

and any one know if the small case welded diff thats in the car would last long whit the 2.5 until i get an lsd for it the diff came outta a 1.8is

i have had a small case welded diff in my m50 for ages, never had any problems, now that the car is turbocharged we will see how much it can take.

325 Pas pump works fine.
It's easier to connect the pipe from the reservoir to the pump if you change it to one from the 325

The pipe from the rack to the pump can be fiddly when you try to fit the bolt as well.

np Dave i have been onto some one for a few bits that i need and he has the pas pump so ill get it off him too any one know if the brackets are the some for the alternator and pas pump on the 316 and 325...

hey guys any one know what way the fuel lines go from the 316 to 325 as there are 3 lines for the 316 2 came up to the fuel rail and the other to a unit whit a cable on it then to the tb ill get a pic up shortly

hey guys time for an update..

i got the head back today also got the gearbox -- rad and water bottle ..

i also ordered all the new bits yesterday should have them tomorrow
witch are engine mounts - full head gasket kit - head bolts - clutch kit -
timing belt kit and plugs and oil filter...

also have a few questions if any one can help..

any one know the best way to mount the water bottle as there is no where on the car to fit it..

also need find out what way the alternator and p/s pump go's if any one can help ill put a pic up off the way i have it at the min...

and any one that has put a 325i into a 316 can they let me know what way the accelerate cable go's to the tb thanks

a wee update

have most of the engine back together just need put the fuel rail and inlet manifold on...

should have the engine in the car tomorrow eve as i got the hoist set up today..
i am hoping to have the car running by the weekend if i can get the rest of the parts needed have them sorted just need sort out what day to pick them up

another update got the engine in the car today

still have to put in the rad - exhaust - cooler - prop - pipes and loom
but in saying that they easy enough to put in so should have the car finished tomorrow and running once my m8 parts whit the ecu he has for me

would of got the lot done today but had go get the last of the parts

hear is a few pic's of what was done today and ill have pic's up tomorrow off it finished

need some help getting no spark but engine is turning fine

Is the wiring connected to the coil. and plug lead attached.
All plug leads fitted to the distributer cap in the correct order???

thanks for the reply m8 got spark now it was the crank sensor..
but i am now having another prob the fuel is not returning to the tank and the spark plugs are dry any idea on what would cause this thanks

It may be that you've connecteed the fuel pipes the wrong way round at the fuel rail and pressure regulator.
They may need swapped round

well m8 was the first thing i checked but they are right way round...think it was blocked as i put air through it and it passed through it but i am still not getting fuel into the engine is there a relay for the injector's... what would be the best way to test the injector's to see if they are getting power thanks

wooohooo got the car going it sounds great

all that left to do is cut back bumper for exhaust put in the rad and fill whit water then it be time for the test drive

need some help the blower and mirrors not working any one know what could of happened..

i have checked the relay and fuse and they are ok

there no power going to the blower switch

Probably something to do with the wire connected to the smallest terminal on the starter motor.
