I started the S50 strip down today and ran into a few niggles,
the car is a 1996 3.2 evo , when stipping the loom there was another plug beside the x20 loom plug with a brown and red wire with seems to be oil temp to insturment cluster but there was also a purple and black going to insturment cluster coming from pin 17 on the ecu ,
Any of the diagrams i have are wrong and dont show this
also the oil level sender seems to be wired back to the ecu pin44 and not back to the x20 plug like my m50 , can i remove this and fit a m50 sender unit and wire it back the e30 check control or will the ecu go into fault .
Any wiring info would be great .

You've found the X69 connector. You have correctly identified the oil temp wire (brown/red). The violet/black is the oil level signal from the ECU to the instruments. On the M3 Evo, the oil level sender works in a completely different way, and is not compatible with the E30 wiring. Just leave it disconnected and you will be fine. It will log an error in the ECU, but won't cause any running problems. Just wire up the level sender that comes in the E34 M50 sump, as this is similar to the E30 one.
I suspect you're looking at American S50 diagrams, and this is why you can't find the connections listed. You can download the correct UK spec diagram from HERE.

Ian your my new hero ! thanks for the link that will come in handy , I will replace the s50 oil sensor with a m50 type .
Just a quick one on the ews am i right in thinking that i just need to wire it back up as was in e36 power wise and can leave connections to body control module and radio + central locking dissconnected .
Thanks again for the help.

That should be okay.dicko wrote:am i right in thinking that i just need to wire it back up as was in e36 power wise and can leave connections to body control module and radio + central locking dissconnected .

This diagram shows the absolute minimum you need to connect.

Ian.

Ian do you have any diagrams for a e30m3 manufactured 11/86 .
I have a one but its from the states , and not suiting the car ,
I am wondering where to splice in the road speed signal to the ecu , thinking of coming of the red/brown wire that goes to the obc , and fuel rate ,and engine speed thinking of going straight up to the clocks , .
To make matters worse someone has already had a go at doing an m50 engine conversion and blown the ecu , so the wiring they have done was rough and i am worried that they have chopped out something I might need ,
The s14 wirning set up seems a lot differnt to the m20 , loom from ecu seems combined with other general wiring going through bulk head ,

All my E30 diagrams are from the states (only the US spec ETM is available). Saying that, they are usually 99% accurate, certainly where the engine speed & fuel rate signals are concerned. As with all E30s, the engine speed & fuel rate signals did not go through the C101 on the earlier models, and only started around the 1987/88 facelift.dicko wrote:Ian do you have any diagrams for a e30m3 manufactured 11/86 .

I don't think the M3 ECU ever got a road speed signal, so you can pick it up on the brown/red going to the OBC. As for the tacho & fuel rate signals, you should be able to hook up to these above the glovebox. You're looking for the C104 connector. This is a small 3 pin connector. Pin 1 is the tacho (black), and pin 3 is the fuel rate (white/yellow). I don't recall what's in pin 2, but you don't need it.I am wondering where to splice in the road speed signal to the ecu , thinking of coming of the red/brown wire that goes to the obc , and fuel rate ,and engine speed thinking of going straight up to the clocks
Seeing as the S50 X20 connector has all these signals, it would be nice to run new wires under the dash, and connect in at the C101/X20 connector. Failing that, you could hook in next to the ECU.

Thanks Ian your right no speed sig to my s14 ecu anyway , I found the c104 plug but it was just sitting there pluged into nothing , ( maybe the other end was cut away by previous attempt ) I ran extra wires up to the e30 fuse box through the original gromet ( a pain but i hate lose wires ) i am doing the x20/x69 to c101 joint in the fuse box .
I will be soldering and heatshrinking all joints ( adhesive lined ) and running new wires behind dash .
thanks again
