Is it a major deal if your donor car is a 96 m3 3.2 ( guessing it has ews2)
I am thinking its just a case of getting all the ews module,s and loop + key and wire it into the e30 system , it not a "Kan bus" system or anything its ?.

Thanks lads, I have the donor car so shouldent need ews removing ,I will swap it over the the e30 .
Its good to know it can be removed if needed . :D

You'll need to make your own EWS wiring loom. It's all integrated into the E36 wiring loom, so not a simple unplug job.

I was thinking that Ian I will take the loom out of the e36 and remove all ews wiring
I like wiring thank fully .
The e30 m3 shell its going into has already had a failed transplant attempt so the c101 plug is removed ,I wil have to tidy up that mess as well , Do e36 m3 send a different pulse to the taco to a e30 , I know the m3 coding plug will have to change ( 4pot / 6pot ) but i read somewhere that e30 clocks wont work with e36 m3 ecu ?

It's the same type of signal, but calibrated differently. It will run the E30 tacho, but the reading will be approx 12% high.

I used one of THESE on my conversion. This will also save you having to change the coding plug.

You'll also have to fit an E30 temp gauge sender on the engine, as the S50 sender has the wrong resistance. If you also want the OBC/Econometer to show fuel consumption and range correctly, you'll need on of THESE.

Thanks Ian them little bits of info are a big help and save hours of trawling the net ,
What about the air pump i was thinking of making up a resistor so the ecu would still think its connected , how did you do this .

You could do, but it's not really needed. Mines been running fine for years without it connected. Although it is stored in the ECU as a fault, it's not one that puts you in limp mode, or changes how the engine performs.

Ian did you reinforce the diff mount at all , I was thinking of fitting a the rear off a e36 diff (with 2 mounts ) And making a brace that goes all the way across the boot .
The roads are very rough here and I am worried about the owner doing enthusiastic starts
and removing rear diff mount . 8O

Nope :)

I've given it some serious abuse over the years, and never had any issues. You'll find the power delivery is so smooth, that it doesn't put massive loads on the mounting points.

slightly off topic but related, does anyone fit the s50 and use aftermarket engine management?

personally i would rather have the stock ecu on such an engine but it would be allot easier in many ways not to bother
Looking for an e30 in the north east!

There was a chap on here recently that can remove the EWS systems from these ecu's at a price.

For daily use you REALLY need to use the std ecu. The mapping work to get to that standard of running would be immense and cost a fortune. It goes as far as exhaust gas recirculation by adjusting cam timing. Serious time/effort by clever engineers. I'm normally a big advocate of aftermarket ecu's for the tuning possibilities but on one of theses i'd stay stock. I think that only the v pricey ecu's like motec can run the vanos.

Thanks Ian might just fit a z3 back plate and leave mount original.

As jaistanley said the ecus that can run the vanos are expensive and difficult to map.
The big problem is not only double vanos but variable as well not just two position like the m50 vanos . I spoke with a tuner about using one for a s54 engine he had already fitted one in a opel manta drift car and said he got 385bhp but was not very happy with low rpm torque , The ecu used was a "LINK" and said a ball park figure for ecu ,loom , and mapping would be about £3800 + vat and it would take 4/5 days of mapping .
He also reckoned if was fitting this engine he would fit fixed cams and forget about the vanos , this would work out a lot cheaper and he said he would get more power .
