Is that like a Joe Bloggs conversion or more similar to a Fred Smith?

Dave F makes the sealed airbox type things iirc? Like a formed heat shield that seals to the inner wing & bonnet?

yeah tis like a box that pulls air from the air feed to the braking system and keeps induction cooler. Hope its not a joe bloggs thing for 170 odd quid. does anyone know if they are worth the money then or no one tried em?

Save your £170 and stick with the standard airbox.

The Dave F kit is big news on the E36 forums I beilive along with the "Alpina 527" M50 inlet manifold upgrade for the 328 slugs.
For the E30, just make sure the cold air trumpet is connected to the front of the airbox from the grill and use either a standard paper filter or a K&N panel filter.
Cone filters are only any cop if they are in an enclosure with a decent cold air feed, otherwise you are just sucking up hot air from under the bonnet. Another side effect of a cone filter is a drop off in low end torque.
Scoops which take air from down near the brake ducts are dangerous IMO as you risk taking a big lungfull of water if you hit deep standing water and hydraulicing your engine (bent conrods and general scrap)

Those E36 boys can be suckered into anything if enough people nod
You have to be careful with cone filters as the filtering area can be smaller than that of a standard box, dont forget the air isnt filtered as effectively either.
As maxfield said, you wont beat the standard box with a new £5 element

These things are all about sound any ways. £170 seems alot but then the ITG maxogen is circa £250+?
Sorry that made me giggle lol

I have decided against a cone filter for my S50 swap. the AFM is quite delicate when it comes to oil invested air (oil from the cone filter)

I had one on my old E36 M3. neat bit of kit is was came with a little oil breather filter a big cone filter and the shaped box to seal in the cold air and it made a great sound under exceleration!
Power wise.... Alot of the e36coupe boys sware that they've had posative results and in comparison to a gruppe M filter thier more than half the price! it certainly felt a little sharper low down but I never did a before and after power run so who knows.
Uwe- Never knew you was going S50! you gonna be tweaking it a little too

And NO, I am not going to tweak it. Why? Has 60-70hp more in stock form than my modified S14.

fair play guys. V informative. especially e30 beemerlad and playo. Prob will stick to original kit and just buy new filter after the thought of sucking in water. very bad idea, I also own an off roader with a snorkel but have seen many more less fortunate people than myself and well dont wanna blow me motor. plus i save a wedge o cash. quids in.

I used to work with Dave F, the E36 boys have had some impressive gains with this kit, no idea if it will make any difference on a E30 though.

So it seems, how many are replacing a 5 year old filter element with it though?E30Mark wrote:I used to work with Dave F, the E36 boys have had some impressive gains with this kit
I wouldnt have thought there was that much airflow around an E36 headlight,
The link for the 21bhp gain on the M3 isnt working for some reason

all it seems to be is a k+n induction kit with a plastic shroud ? whats dave f 's hand in this? i used to deal with a dave f from demon tweeks, its not him per chance is it?
i mean i could order k+n's and pass them on to others, add my cut on the price and call them fuzzy h's induction kits.

Thats all it is fuzzy, just this chap has added a piece of plastic that fits the engine bay contours.
Like I said earlier in the thread, E36 types will throw money at anything if enough people nod
Cant fault the bloke though, got to be £100 profit in each one

hi appletree. was it worth the work? does boxing off an induction filter see better throttle response low down?

hard to tel realy as i swopped the filter and the shroud at the same time, the filter did make a difference up top but it made a big hole in the orque low down, the IS is a bit prone to this when yo fit a filter but i swopped my stainless one to a ITG which made abit of a difference and found some of the low down torque again.
