Why would someone want to put such a shit engine and weak engine from a shit polo or something into an E30, when you can put a 3.5 litre beast of an engine into it and have it sound nice and not like a van?

Not offending you mate, just thinking about the idea, nothing is intended to offend you.
I personaly don't know of anyone who's done this...other may?

Please, don't do it, it's a crime, if you put a VW engine into it, then at least put something bigger and more powerful into it, a good choice will be to put a bigger engine than the original engine? The 3.5s are good choices, pelnty of power to play with!!!!

Thats the engine we had in our Audi A4 saloon! Was pretty quick if i remember but nothing really special! I'd look at other options to be honest! The fuel consumption was pretty heavy aswell! (Into the 20's  )

those that knock the VW 1.8 20VT engine are a bit wet behind the ears.

A very good tunable lump happy at 300bhp on standard internals. All bolt on goodies are what separate the 150bhp lump found in a 1.8T Passat with the Audi S3 and TT 225bhp lump.

A RWD gearbox would be a pain though and probably other mods and fabrication needed to sump etc etc

I sold a Skoda Octavia to buy my e30, it had the 1.8t engine in it and ran a very reliable 320hp for 40k miles (and still going as far as I know!)

I agree they are excellent engines BUT

Why go to the trouble and effort of engineering one into an E30 when a nissan SR20DET or CA18DET engine and box will near enough drop straight in? They are cheap, VERY tuneable and packaged just right. Custom engine and gearbox mounts, custom prop and you're nearly done!..

Just my tuppence..

Isn't there a RWD bellhousing available for the VW 20v engine?

Vaguely recall reading about it in PPC where there's a guy building a diesel powered Westfield. Apparently the bolt pattern for the diesel and petrol 4cyl VW engines is all the same.

One of the most tunable engines produced by vag. The 1.8t was also used in audi a4's and i think they are rwd as the engine is mounted side ways.

I read a report once that when this engine was tested it was run at redline for 72hrs and did not fail.

They are either FWD or 4WD.

They don't do RWD, well until they bring out a racing r8.

yeah i remeber that to! wasn't there something about a adaptor palte you could buy from OZ? you had to use a supra or 300ZX box though.

that was a good article in PPC, wonder whats happend to it now?

By the way the 1.8T motors are pretty strong what hat i have heard. stick some rod and pistons in at with a BIG turbo 600bhp can be yours! :)

also as they are used in EVERYTHING to have VW on it there are sh!t loads of them about. i heard 350bhp can be run stock with simple bolt on. tuning them is cheap as the US guys have them to and make some pretty impresive kit for them.

Cheers

Chris.

It is doable, but i think not worth it. 1.8t vag engine is bit "lazy" or it feels like that, it is true it has a lots of tunning potencial, but costs of fitting one into an e30 is just not wallet friendly. I think you could go with an audi one, coz it has the proper gearbox, one thing i'm not sure, is how to make gearbox turn only the driveshaft (quattro gearbox).
Plus there are wiring issues and the list goes on :)

^ The dude in that thread says he used a 320i box.
And that the wiring was simple.

Personally the 1.8t vag engine is good so is the diesel version both do-able later would be my preference has more plus points and less tuning costs for decent fuel economny and performance all round.

The only thing i can add is that the waterpumps are known to fail on these, the OEM items have plastic impellors but i think metal impellor items are available now.

Other than that i can't fault them 8)

well wasnt exspecting this much response!!!

thanks for the links i also remember the guy putting the TDI engine in a westfield in PPC will try and dig that magazine out tonight if i can find it!!

only toying with the idea at the moment as i have a solid but slow 1985 320i that iv stipped and used for the odd track day and someone has just kindly driven into and probably wrote off my 200bhp bora daily drive

so i have all the parts for a conversion full wiring and everything well apart from a rwd box and to say the engine is standard apart from a stage 1 map and in a heavy car its pretty quick! so with a few choice mods could be fun in rwd form!

was thinking of doing the obviouse choice of getting a mk2 golf to put it in but im currently building (well nearly finished now) a 160bhp front engine 1978 mini so another quick front wheel drive motor doesnt appeal

I was thinking about the same swap this morning as i was walking to work, but then i though wait a minute VW do not do no RWD setup, but Audi do.

Will this engine mount onto Audi gearbox and RWD setup of something like the old A4 20v 5cylinder?

Most engines in the VAG range are fitted sideways/transverse where as BMW are long ways, solution is simple a Ford gearbox like a Type9, MT75, T5 ect... with removable bell housing, most bell housings ar £200-£300 with range of splines available to suit.

could you get an audi quattro box and weld the center diff up?? how reliable or possible it would be i dont know!
all things concidered.........1.8ts are good engines.
clearence with the sump/subframe, fabricating engine mounts and wiring etc will be your head aches!

also youll need the inlet and exhaust manifolds from a longitudinal mounted 1.8t car too (a4/a6)....
