I have an 525e the engine and gearbox is now out. The 200 head is being changed for the 731 head, a 2.5 inlet manifold with injectors, 3.0 bar FPR, and motronic 1.3 with the matching AFM, idle control valve anda chip from A-tech. A 5 speed manual close ratio gearbox is also being fitted with the early light M20 flywheel .

Question answered now. Now someone who did something similar with a 525e, eta block, 2.7 crank, 2.7 conrods and pistons with a 731 head mentioned their where extra coolant chanels in the eta block comapred to the 731 cylinder head. Has anyone else come across this? He also mentioned that by using a eta headgasket he drilled the extra holes into the 731 cylinder head and the extra channels where there! This sounds a little odd but is it true. Have all those people on here with 2.7 built out of eta blocks a 731 head done a similar thing. Is this true?

New question

To plumb in motronic 1.3 will I need an oxygen sensor that my eta with otronic 1.0 does not have? If so where does it go?

Also will the front pulleys on the front of eta motor have to change for ones of a 325i to ount the trigger wheel which allows the snsors to work or is there a way arround that?

How many sensors should there be at the front of the engine?

Thanks for reading.

i think you mean the extra holes in 2.5 blocks only iirc. Between the cylinder bores, very small holes. 320's and eta's did without them. Desirable in high power 2.7's but if your under 200bhp then i've been told it's fine how it is.

early 2.5 flywheel is only around 0.1kg lighter than a low comp one!

Just the pulleys though (6 bolts), not the hub (1 extremely tight bolt).

Minor point but may save you the same grief I suffered!! The E28 type water pump will need swapping for an E30 type, and any other cooling system bits need to be E30.The engine will need 'dressing' to suit it's installation. You have fitted the plate over the distributer hole and fitted the E30 type H/T cap on the end of the cam?

All the cooling bits are staying E28 at the moment. These should work and provide sufficent cooling. At least they do on a 527i that I know somone on the 5 series forum has built. A new pully set has been ordered.

As for the "dressing" I am not sure I know what you mean. As for the HT cap, I think I got all the neccesary wiring with the motronic 1.3 box. The built is progressing and it should be ready next week.

The E28 type water pump takes up too much room at the front of the engine, works fine, but your radiator will not fit.E28 is a longer car than E30...by 'dressing' I mean that the basic engine is the same in both instalations, but the minor fittings such as water pump vary between car instalations.I tried using the E28 water pump and discovered that there was no room for it.....as you have to remove the cambelt to swap the water pump it is much easier to get it right before you fit the engine, more room to see what you are doing with the engine on the garage floor!!

Given the engine is going into an E28 I cannot see why an E28 waterpump which used to fit no longer fits?

Since this section is strictly for 'tech help' for E30's, everyone assumed that this engine is for an E30!
