Hey guys...
what temp should the M30 be running at? ive got a leccy fan set up on mine, and ive adjusted it to come on just before the half way mark!.. well it comes on, but doesnt switch off again!.. while im driving or sitting in traffic, she sitts on half way and only sometimes creeps over until i start driving again! im using the E34 rad which i thought would have been better , or maybe i just need a better fan? what experience are you guys having?? i thought a fan should kick in for 2-3mins to bring temp down and then switch off again !!

mines stays at half, but does creep over if sitting in traffic.. goes back down again while driving but not enough to switch the leccy fan off? i reckon theres gotta be a magic fan out there somewhere that will bring the temp down so much and then switch off to relax for a little while !!!rav320uk wrote:mine did that today, stayed on so i pulled out the relsy to turn it off.But last week, it wouldn't come on, so replaced the relay. It's doin alsorts

CFM = cubic feet per minute IIRC
I'm still using a standard 325 rad with an E30 aircon fan and only ever have the fan on sat in traffic, my normal operating temp is just over 1/4 but in traffic with the fan on it sits just below 1/2.

Looking back at the original question, the running temperature of an engine is NOTHING to do with the fan or radiator! The running temperature is set solely and exclusively by the water thermostat.
The radiator's sole job is to provide a resevoir of cooler water, that the thermostat can use to control the temperature, by admitting it into the engine in a controlled manner.
The fan's sole job is to make sure that the water in the radiator is indeed cooler than the engine.

Thanks for the above Brian, but when a fan comes on, is it ok for it to stay on for long periods? im trying to find out if there is a stronger/better fan that i could be using? although my set up does not overheat, i just think the fan should cut in then switch of after maybe 2-3 mins.. mines staying on for a longer period..

If the fan stays on when you are driving at any speed, it's either the radiator is inadequate for the job, the thermoswitch switching temperature is too low, or the thermoswitch is too close to the cylinder head.

Fitted there, it's measuring the engine temperature, not the radiator temp, and since the temperature where you have it should remain constant, it won't be doing what it should.rav320uk wrote:My thermoswith sits in the 19mm spare on the thermstat housing, i take it i should noe be movin it?
