Replacing 4cyl for a 6cyl help...

I'm not down the with lingo on engine names etc

I maybe getting a 318is for the track, I am looking at replacing it with a 325 engine.

Apart from the engine, gearbox and ECU what else will I need loom wise? Also what else do i need to consider

Why not just buy a 325i?

Consider a base spec 325i may well be cheaper than a 318is to begin with.

The one im looking at getting used to belong to me and is all but ready to go. It needs a new gearbox but thinking about spending the little extra and getting the larger engine.

You will need some 6 pot springs due to the extra weight cover the front and also a full 325 exhaust or a replacement stainless one.

Depending what diff you have you may want to upgrade to a mid size LSD diff with a 3.91 or 3.64 ratio as the IS's 4.10 might be alittle low geared

If you're pulling out a 4 valve per pot motor, at least replace it with something comparable - stick a M50 in there.

an m50 is the engine that is installed in the e36's... the m50b25 and b28 are in respective the 325 and 328 engines, the b25 has 24valves as does the b28... the b25 produces 192bhp and the b28 produces 193bhp this is due to the b28 being strangled by its own inlet manifold, if you replace the b28 manifold with a b25 one and remap the ecu, it will produce 220bhp all day long.
this is the second time iv said this today... weird!

the time you have baught an IS and changed the engine, you could have got a mint 325i to start with

The IS im looking at already has uprated brakes suspension roll cage remapped ecu etc, its all but ready to go for track except it needs a new gearbox and as i said thats why i looking at spendng the extra on the larger engine.

In actual fact the engine that's in it is from an e36 318is, they any better the e30 1.8?

If it's a later E36 iS then it'll be a 1.9, 140bhp and a bit more torque, but not as rev happy and a bit soulless is comparison.

Really doesn't seem logical to me to buy a good E30 only to swap the engine to a different motor that you can buy an E30 with anyway. The ECU, brakes, as well as a large amount of the drivetrain will need to be swapped in order to do it properly. If you desperately want the car though, drop a 24v in it, don't bother with the 12v relics.

So either buy the mostly prepared 318 and enjoy the 1.8'nuss or forget it and buy a 325 and rebuild that?
