If it's a later E36 iS then it'll be a 1.9, 140bhp and a bit more torque, but not as rev happy and a bit soulless is comparison.
Really doesn't seem logical to me to buy a good E30 only to swap the engine to a different motor that you can buy an E30 with anyway. The ECU, brakes, as well as a large amount of the drivetrain will need to be swapped in order to do it properly. If you desperately want the car though, drop a 24v in it, don't bother with the 12v relics.
