Hi, I was wondering how the fuel consumption would compare between the 5.0L v12 engine, and 2.5L 24v turbo engine if both were tuned to around 350hp.

i bet both aint too great. your worried about fuel consumption with 350 horses.....its never going to be great.
have a search for the fuel consumption of the 5.0 v12 in its normal body ( guessing 5 series?) and then raise it up slightly for the lighter body of the e30. atleast its a rough guess.
im sure the turbo boys will let you know how they do on fuel.
if its over 20mpg i think that would be good from those motors.

Hi guys cheers for that, to be honest I'm not bothered about fuel consumption I was just curious, as I used to think that the v12 would use more, but the more I learn and get experience with different engines, it seems that fuel consumption seems to be similar depending on the engines power output rather than the size of the engine, so I was wondering if the consumption wouldbe similar even though the v12 is twice the size of the turbo's 2.5. I was also curious as I'm building a custom e30 at the moment, and have thought all of the way through that I wanted a nicely done 2.5L 24v turbo engine for it, but the more I think about it, I like my cars to pull as soon as I touch the throttle and not have a delay, so I starting to think that the turbo engine, that will cost a lot more for the spec I want, will then dissapoint me as the lag will get on my nerves, so I'm thinking a slightly tuned v12 would be more what I'm after.
Has anyone ever driven a v12 e30?

That's a trick question.
In 5th @ 70, plant it, takes 2 secs to get up and going.
4th gear @ 90, plant it, istant boost
3rd gear @ 60+, plant it, hang the fuk on!
1st only just boost, 2nd has boost from the off if you plant it in first.
Dropping a gear sorts out lag, or just pumping it just before you plant it proper.
In the races I have had where a N/a car has jumped me a little, I've flew straight past as soon as the revs are over 3k.
I've no lost, yet........

so in that cause turbo 325i will be better on fuel than a v12. the v12 wont be light and will be a tricky old beast to install.
there was a v12 e30 that did plenty of track days. im think it was here on the zone.
i think they are ally lumps so the weight is not over the top either. iirc.

hmm, its going to be a tough one, both sound like they would be great. Theres a clip on you tube of an e30 with a v12 and two turbos, maybe that guy couldn't deside either.

Its not an E30, nor does it answer the question, but someone I know is putting this:

In here:

He runs/owns a garage, so has the facilities and potentially the time! He hasn't got as far as properly fitting the engine yet, but is probably fabbing up mounts etc for it atm, and we all think its cool as fcuk. Managed to get a manual box for it too, the lucky git! (manual box's are very expensive for these btw).
And a last photo of the 2 cars side by side, 7 series totally stripped, just to prove I'm not telling crap! Can't wait to see this car on track, it'll be awesome! Even more so if I get to blag a go!

Crazymonk - the E32 750i V12. Which is an M70.
Wiki tells me thats 299 bhp, I imagine that if you give it a free'er flowing exhaust it'll put out slightly more. Most important though is: 450 N·m (330 lb·ft) @ 4100
And as I said, he's got a manual g/b for it too!

It doesn't matter - just do the V12 build!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I would say the turbo would be better on fuel - depending on mapping, etc.
I recall ant saying one of his was mapped to be economical 90% of the time and then full on a WOT!!!
To be fair though, if you're gonna do it, you're gonna map it for performance and drive it hard - or you wouldn't be doing it!!!!
I had a 5.6 V12 in my 8 series, ok so it's a bit heavier, but i drove it daily and averaged about 13-16mpg most days!!!!!
Do the V12, stick on a turbo/turbo's and run it on LPG!!!!!!!!!

A twin turbo v12 in an e30 would be a beast!!!! but I think I'd rather have something like that in a hard top with a cage and track day it as well as use it one the road. It would probably snap my cab in half!!!
