I am thinking about this for a 525e. My thinking is by the time a garage has fitted a 731 head and done a manual conversion and A-tech done a MS conversion, an M50 conversion might be cheaper. I have the parts for converting the M20B27 except for MS and the gearbox, although I do have a getrag 240 gearbox which may or may bolt up.

What is the typical cost of a decent M50 with 5 speed, all engine wiring ECU and mounts. Probably a whole car then. I see cheap sub £1000 E34's knocking about but is that what I really want.

Could fitting an M50 be cheaper? I am thinking of an M50 as I would expect this engine/car to be cheaper than an M52, it is also a little bit simpilar if it goes wrong.

Prop shaft might be an issue but not insurmountable.

Anyway thoughts would be appriacated.

Great engine the M50 and you'll easily pick up an E34 525 for well less than 1k - Get the whole motor, might be a minter - but the M50 would look cooler in the 525e
Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.

Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....

i dont think you have to do megasquirt just get the ecu setup for a 2.7 either thro a chip or a remap

i would imagine an m50 conversion would be a fair bit more but i could be wrong

When Ant quoted me he said approx £600 for a proper rolling road map for the old motronic 1.1? and about £1000 for MS fully set up. MS is better for not alot more cash.

I did an M50 conversion for Radish on here a few months ago, supplied and fitted it cost him not a lot over £1000 as he provided most of the 'other parts' like diff, fan, servo etc

I bought a complete E34 525i 1995 N plate for £350 via ebay last month. It was, erm, cosmeticaly challenged but we ran it for 800 miles to prove the engine.Engine now sat in my garage awaiting it's new home and the remains of the E34 have vanished for ever.(IF anyone wants a light grey cloth interior, manual 'box, diff, instrument cluster or stalk controls for an E34 get in touch...blatant plug)
