M42 Ignition Coil Bracket

for M42 swappers, what have you done with the ignition coil brackets?

The options I have are welding the original mounts near the strut tower, or making a bracket to mount onto the strut tower like my turbo iS..however I am kind of missing the tools to do either!!

Any suggestions or bodges till I can get the bracket made? Was thinking temporary zip ties..

Trouble is, this sort of thing tends to be 'temporary' for the next ten years!
Another option is to use M50 individual coil packs.

You would be better to do a coil on plug conversion. Thats what I'm going to do, then you can forget about the bracket. You can see more details on the M42 Club forums -

although you still seem to need a bracket?? which would be custom...doesnt look cheap and quick, nice idea though!

got any details on costs for your COP conversion?

It depends how handy you are. I was hoping to make the bracket myself from sheet aluminium with a guilotine and a hole saw. Then I reckon there are coils available in the scrapyard that would fit. I was hoping to do it for about £40 (tenner a coil).

Theres a lot of reading to do, but the M42club forums seem to suggest that there are 2 or 3 coils from various bmw's that can be made to fit. IIRC Tim_s on here may have been experimenting with some E36 coils?

Once you have done the conversion of course you will never have to replace your HT leads ever again

They say that COP conversions cost about the same as fitting a set of "performance" leads. The brackets aren't complex and could easilly be made up DIY stylee!

I am normally reasonably handy, I just have no tools!

It's not a bad idea at all...will wait in interest as to which coils you pick up - if you find a spare set that works, I would be happy to take them off your hands in exchange for the cost of them + a beer commission

I'm definitely going to do it; apart from looking great, my leads are past it and I dont want to weld and paint my engine bay

I'll be starting the coil search in the next 2 or 3 weeks.
