318IS E36 ENGINE SWAP, WHAT DO I NEED GUYS

I have recently bought a convertible 318i 1991, I have spent 2000 on it, adding suspension, brakes, roof bits and various items, it was in really poor condition, and just when i thought everything was ok, my engine knackered.
Ive been planning to take the car around Europe so i need something reliable, do you guys believe an e36 318is engine is a good choice for something like this. How much bhp do they kick out, and is fuel economy any good.
I have no idea on the whole procedure or what i need, will these fit my existing mounts etc.

You will need an e30 318is loom and ecu (unless you get e36 ecu and igntion barrell and coded key, preferably door locks) and e30 318is exhaust manifold, downpipe and round engine mounts, the 318i square mounts will work as a temporary measure, just turn them upside down. It is easier to start off with e30 318is engine complete with all the bits. whatever engine you get you'll need it's intake manifold throttle body and afm. Also need the 318is radiator mounts to take a longer radiator.
140bhp ish for the 1.8 e36 lump, 136ish for e30 lump.

Thanks alot alburglar, do you know if there is a difference in engines between the m44 and m42 to do with fitting, and also would you consider this a hard task or not to fit, ive never performed an engine change before. Is it easy to rent a crane to lift and fit the engine in and out.

If you had an M42 to start with this would be fair swap, but you don't so I say look at an M50, M30 swap or M20 if you want something easy.

Why do you want an M44? As you car is a heavy convertible you could do with the torque of a bigger engine.

Im completely open to offers, i have about 600 pounds tops to spend. I need something that will get me all the way around europe reliably, with at least 25 - 30 mpg, and to be honest for me the more power the better, but at the same time i need it to be easy and not cost over what i have. I dont have much of an idea of what can fit, and what problems i will encounter or what the right price would be for one. If anyone can give me any details on what would be the right choice, what i will need and how much it will cost, please do!!!!!

You can do a M20 325i engine swap for 600 but you won't get 30mpg

Thats why im thinking of sticking with the 318is, because at least then ill get something close to that, i think?

different sensors on the m44 engine so m42 will be much easier for a first attempt
