Toby I've got a spare M30 3.5 out of an E28 and I'm quite sure the oil filter housing is still attached (although I think it has the feed for an oil cooler) Do you have a picture of the one you need so I can check what I have is correct?? if it's what you need you can have it mate, just cover the postage.

P.S just found this thread, not been on the zone in a while... awesome project mate :thumb:

Yeah that'll do. it's easy to bridge the oil cooler connections (tbh i should really put a cooler on it :D )

it wants to look something like this...

I'm happy to pay for it though mate

i'll send you a pm.

today's pics...

plenum trial fitted to check clearance, seems fine. the plenum is isolated from the engine via rubber boots so will not transmit much vibration to the shell even if it occasionally touches.

Image

repositioned my golf coolant res now there's not an air intake in the way. i'm a bit concerned the outlet is low compared to the height of the thermostat housing/bleed screw. could do with looking at how high the late 325i res outlet is, as i think most m30 swaps are using this.

dipstick tube adjusted to somewhere where you can (just about) use it :D

finally, can someone plese tell me how you connect the heater matrix hoses on an M30 because I've forgotten AGAIN :banghead: :screwy: :x

Pipe from thermostat housing goes to top of heater matrix,
pipe from top hose goes to bottom of heater matrix.

Good work as always dude!
Can't wait to see it finished! :thumb:

there was never any bracket to support that triangular reservoir mate, and the bonnet clouted it everytime i shut it! and there's little room for piping at the back of the engine bay now. it wasn't ideal

this one should hopefully be fine. i haven't got an m20 325i one to use and the bracket it would mount on is long gone anyway!

which pipe does the res T into? i think it's the one that goes from the heater matrix to the stat housing?

Oh, i wasn't aware of the fitting issues you had using that tank, i was thinking of swapping mine over to one.

You could use a 7 Series E32 expansion tank which bolts to the top of the bulkhead and sits above the cam cover.

that's what i had on it Andy. 'sits above cam cover' in my case was 'sits on cam cover and smacks bonnet every time you shut it' :(

Slow progress due to darkness and coldness. :D

E28 oil filter housing sorted thanks (very much) to Charlie.

few bits of coolant plumbing done in good old copper, not much else though :(

re the fpr, can anyone tell me (Ant?) which is the input (from fuel rail) and which is output (back to tank) 8)

my guess is that one on bottom (one with hose on in pic) is the return and the one on the side from fuel rail

Are they the oil cooler unions on the top of the filter housing ?

I like the copper work, i'm going to use it on my ICV if i ever get around to fitting it  :)

yeah they're the unions. going to bridge them for now but nice to have the option, will see how hot it runs once the boost's up a bit

copper is nice to work with, i wish you could join aluminium that easily :(

didn't know you had an ICV, that sounds like a good idea... is it electric? is that a daft question? :D

Like that new TB that i've been trying to sort out it's another Ford part from a Mondengo, two pin electric.

The three pin BMW ones arn't compatable with my ECU.

I tried fitting it ages ago but couldn't get it to work at the time, i might have another go at it over crimbo.

getting there with these now (slowly!) :D

got a smaller TPS from a Sierra, cut down the throttle spindle and remade the TPS bracket, to free up room for the top radiator hose stub.

Image

Image

to make the stub, i cut a section off a Transit inlet manifold :D

this just about fits in the available space, although it doesn't mate to the thermostat housing very accurately :?

will get this tig welded to the stat housing, then weld the original stub to the end of it. probably have to make a bleet screw up because this new stub is higher than the normal bleed nipple.

Image

Image

once this is done that's (hopefully) the end of the tricky stuff...

hmm i hope not lol

few pics from today's frostbite spectacular

FPR mounted and plumbed in

Image

brake res re-fitted, doesn't hit the plenum now the master cylinder's been moved to the left which is a relief, no need for a remote res

Image

e28 oil cooler connections bridged for the time being!

Image

little bit closer then...

oh plenty of stuff!

have cunningly avoided the porting in the adaptor plate so far, it's as you left it mate. Also need to sort out countersinking it etc for the mount bolts.

otherwise - sort out pressure signal lines to MS/WG/BOV/servo etc - though the air balance rail will be perfect.

fit injectors
sort top rad plumbing - found a nice thick walled aly tube at the breaker today with a few nice bends in it, so now i can take the coolant stub below rather than above the TPS. pleased with that. hopefully get it cut tomorrow ready to be welded, then it's just the rubber hoses to sort.

calibrate new TPS to MS

refit the MS harness along with a lot of jubilee clips :D

there's probably not much else actually 8)
