As Fozzymonster said

Top in
Bottom out

The oil feeds should be vertical, if the oil pressure feed is high you can get away with mounting it above the height of the head but its not a good idea, same with the return should not be lower than the sump itself it does cause cavitation issues; think of it as syphoning effect from petrol tank more it does it on its own less chance of failure.

If its at 45 degrees now its a good idea to clock the turbo housings round so there as verticle as possible.

Right then i did some work over the weekend! And finally I have a built cylinder head (although i took the photos not finished!)

Im just waiting on the vernier pully and spray bar to arrive and then it can be bolted down.

Thanks fozzy, i got the turbo repoistioned where i wanted it!

I think tonight I will be making up a support for the turbo hopefully if I get time.
I was pretty chuffed with myself, being the first proper cylinder head iv built! I think Vw beetle engines dont count!

Question though. I was looking into where to mount my intercooler last night, aslong as I cut away the body work behind the intercooler, Is it ok to have the ic pretty much infront of all the rad? Or will I have issues?

Thanks!
and photos!

Take everything too them and let them work out what you need, trying to do this without the parts to hand can be a PITA!

Mine are all areoquip braided, cost a bit but no hassles at all with them. I had the restricter made up so it could be broken down at the last 12 inches, meant when I changed turbo's I only had to have the top bit made, saved a few pounds there.

What sized restrictor did you use Mark, out of interest? Don't know what all this -6AN etc means, all I wanna know is how big the hole needs to be

Right then, i did some more work on the car this weekend, rebuilt the cylinder head once again, this time I think I have done it all correctly.

Image
Image

So everything is on the cylinder head apart from a few bits i need to order, new thermo housing/water elbow and cam cover, the vernier pulley will be here next month.

Fitting the injector rail on in a minute, i trial fitted the throttle bodies apart from the bolts i bought are to long, but i had three of the originals bolts so at least i can see how it all lines up. They are absoulte porn! (need a clean first!) Sitting in my mind all weekend, I wonder how cheap I can pick up a 325 for, I really want to slap those throttle bodies on a 2.5 engine, bottem end all lightend and balanced, bit of a lairy cam and those tb sat on top would make me a happy man! But i do have a spare block so im thinking i may build that one up so at least if this blows i can swap them over whilst i build yet another engine!

Image
Image
Image

But anyway the task in hand! Ill get the head on the block as soon as the parts arrive, but im now going to make up the ic mounts, at least i need to get the engine bay tidy as its a state! I have also started working on other areas of the car, started replacing trackrod ends and control arms, bushes and fitting the new front suspension, nothing fancy just new top mounts, I think it has KYB shocks but im unsure, will change at a later date though!

The good old sunday morning right up!

Loving your work on the kitchen table! I take it you're either single or you have the perfect wife!

(Jealous as hell fella!). If I walked into the kitchen and announced I was going to build a turbo beemer and it might be there for weeks I'd have divorce papers filed before I could say 'pass me the monkey wrench love.....!'

So i did some more work last night, just need to pick up a few more bolts bits on the cylinder head and then thats good to go back on for last time (until it blows up)

But anyway, I did a bit of cutting last night and managed to prov fit the intercooler. Need to again get some new bolts for the mounts but hey its coming along now!

Subtle enough? I know I could get it to sit back further, but to be fair I really cant be buggered! As im not really aiming for looks!

Although the sleeper look goes out the window haha

just a quick thing, why not move the intercooler down and behind the front valence where alot of people mount them? or is it to big to go in there?

I would...but i think the last guy has nudged a lampost, just the valence is bent quite a bit, but also it would be mean cutting the supports of valance (so its only held by the wing mounts). haha so long sentence shortend, it is slightly to big!
Also making the mounts litterly took a minute as im using existing holes where the bonnet mech used to be.

Im not really going for looks, as if you have seen the rest of the car you would understand why!

It'll be fine, with the increased flow you'll not notice the IC being there.

Phil, I'd flip it upside down and mount it behind the valence, just cut out above the vent to the bumper. Tidy, secure and as stealthy as you can go really.

I'll try find an old pic for you how I used to have my small one.

Fozz.

The valence mounts are either side of the foglights, so you have plenty to play with.

The current IC is resting on the buper irons, I've made a fitted a bracket for it but it's fine as is, whem I flip it I'll need to make two extebsions to the bracket.

no idea on mounts thread, gotta be 14 or 16mm tho.

So i decided tonight to finish work early and get on with some of the jobs in hand....

The cylinder head is now on, with the throttle bodies and fuel rail fitted too

Bit of a basted getting the gaskets to stay behind the tb's so used a tiny tiny tiny bit of almost spray glue just to hold them in place whilst I got the bolts in....

Managed to realise the wiring is a piddle of pee, well certain bits, so at least i can get the main harness on and tidyed ready and much to Ants relief I would imagine!

So anyway here we are just before the fuel rail went on.....
Image
Image

And heres the fuel rail fitted, just need to sort in plenum before that goes on, the linkage is so amazing, i actually bum it haha :o:

Image

Next jobs, well as you can see, i wrote a list...........! As theres a few things i know i would forget about!
Really need to get cracking on this bloody oil system for the turbo and the rest of the car, also getting the oil cooler done too....

Ill put a picture up of it with the bonnet on too, looks 100 times better!

But anyway thoughts, bitchings, slaps let me know what you think!

Pretty sure you just torque in stages, run it, then torque again in the old fashioned way as the studs aren't stretch types.

The ARPs should come with washers and bi-hex nuts too if they're anything like the ones I've got :D
