Quick question. I'm looking at your poly bushes on the front control arm and wondering how you got them into the lollipops? I'm having a nightmare trying to get mine in!
What's the problem Rob, I polybushed mine no problem - give me a call if you want. I just used some wood and a vice! Hell I even put one of mine in the wrong way round and had to get it back out again :o:
Cheers Daf, Bob_s came to the rescue! I nipped up to his this avo. I have no vice is the problem! It's nigh on impossible to get them in without one!

Note to self... Must buy a vice....

From what I've been told (by flowbench-owning engine builders) it's nice to have a step from a small port to a large manifold, this acts to set up the shockwave that works to "tune" the manifold to scavange exhaust gasses at certain frequencies (ie "revs"). It also works as an anti-reversion lip to discourage exhaust gasses re-entering the port.

As the car has a "nicer exhaust note" that implies that the step IS creating extra resonance (the frequency is defined by the dia and length of the primaries).
Yes a small step is good.. Encourages a scavenging effect, especially for a cam'd motor, can help bring it on cam earlier, this however is a huge step! I should have taken a picture of the carbon build up round the ports on the M50 when I took the manifold off! It was amusing

Looking at that photo the purple inserts of your poly bushes are set to 'concentric' position, trather than eccentric (like the M3) which would improve handling further by adding castor....

Good work otherwise. What was done to those S50 manifolds in the end to get them to fit?

Jai

[edit] In fact, it looks like the purple bits are right and the black inserts would need swapping left to right!

I believe the bottom flange was altered slightly/ turned around so the pipe would clear over the ARB, otherwise, no modifications to the top end/ primaries.

I smacked the bulkhead in about 2cm around the edge of the transmission tunnel and after some persuading, I got them to fit.

Got another question, would S50 throttle bodies & plenum be a waste of time on a M50? I.e are the inlet ports going to be too small on the head to gain any real benefits and would I have an issue with clearance of the plenum and clio servo (would I have to move the servo across?)

I f?&cking hate them bushes.

b30 tb's and plenum cause issues but I think b32 tb;s and plenum is ok with the clio servo?

I'm going to leave the S50 throttle bodies for now I think as presumably this would also need a load of mapping and faffing about to get running properly and gain any possible benefits?

I'm going to stop spending on "go faster" bits now and just concentrate on getting the turd on the road as the end is not too far away now.

Good choice! It's so easy to let your mind run away with all sorts of ideas! Get it up and running then you can play with it :D

It seems to be a common error, juniorGT has also done the same

Tried to tell him but he has special ones that increase camber not caster lol. No helping some people.

He has fitted them wrong but as you say, there is no telling some people!

The eccentic bushes move the rear pivot point of the arm further out which moves the outer ball joint forward to increase castor.

They were primarily designed to alow clearance of 16" wheels on M3's.

They are not designed to alter camber and only very slightly do.

they will be staying as they are for now as I don't have the facilities at home to sort them, although I will be in Norwich next weekend so could use the old boy's press.

Gonna have a day on this tomorrow and hopefully get some more done, it's getting close

Well we do have an update ladies & gentlemen.

Started off by changing the rear springs & dampers.

The old & the new
Image
The old shizzle
Image
All back on and bolted up
Image
Looking a lot better under here
Image
With it being a touring, changing rear shocks means getting all the rear interior out, so I used this opportunity to dye the cubby boxes and rear seat backs and load cover
Image
Image
Comes with the rear speaker pods, which hopefully will be a bonus
Image
Notice I got the exhaust fixed on too
Image

Then I decided to fit the alpina front end
Image
Image
Unwrapped these beauties for a quick gander
Image

So she's getting ever further.

Need to do myself a new list of what's left

The exhaust system leaves me with a conundrum, if I fit up the front section of the 2 piece system, the front pipes go directy to where the manifold down pipes end. But that means I don't then have the x pipe which came with the S50 manifold. If I put the x pipe on then it routes the exhaust over to the passenger side, so the system won't line up.

I take it the S50 mani needs the x pipe to be effective?

Exhaust should route to pax. side, three piece system(like mine)joins at the rear of your 'X' pipe, like a hottuning/BTB2 does on an M20 donk. Expect you want loud and look at me rather than the descriete look/sound of mine winkeye so why not source up a Scorpion centre/back or similar?Brand new from GSF,my centre/rear incuding fitting kit came in at under £250.
Good work this weekend BTW,keep it up.... :D

when i had the set up on my e30 i had two pipes going straight from the x pipe onto a scorpion back box. the front bit of the system was too long to mount too the x pipe so i didnt bother with it.

the m50 sounded very aggressive
