Yeah, there are about a thousand sump bolts! 8O

I probably should have just thrown my engine in in the first place instead of the expensive and unsuccessful rebuild!

no Martin I'm just cheap and lazy. that's why my crank pulley is jammed permanently to the crank, the oil pump sprocket nut undid itself and the chain proceeded to come off and smash its tensioner, the motronic gave all sorts of grief because it had been sitting in the rain...

basically the only thing going for my engine was a claimed recent new head and top end. it's lucky that none of these issues killed the engine!

there's nothing quite like a M30 for cheap repairs (replace the whole engine for the price of a peugeot head gasket set!!!)

i like your thinking with the turbo though :D

i feel that my car is moving behind the pace at quite a rate!!! :? i do have plans involving high compression, a lary cam and a sequential LPG system, just to be different. winkeye but that's a loooooong way off.

if you get stuck with anything, give me a shout. i'm quite busy getting my car back on the road (heard that before winkeye ) this weekend but if there's anything i can do... let me know.

Why would it have a flywheel if it was an auto (this new engine) they just have a starter ring and torque converter do they not?

Also, why was your alternator belt on seemingly inside-out? could that be why your PAS belt broke? As that was on inside out too?

The engine I bought must have originally been in an auto and someone had put a flywheel on from a scrapyard (it had 'M30' written in tipex on the back of it!) to use with a manual gearbox, and they neglected to fit a spigot bearing.

The belts were on the correct way when I built the engine, I lost the power steering belt somewhere near my house and when I looked under the bonnet the alternator belt had been chewed and had flipped inside out! :?

Aha that explains it all lol.

btw what is the spigot bearing? n00b question but not sure what it is. I can't remember my flywheel having any bearings...

It's the small bearing that goes in the end of the crankshaft.

The input shaft from the gearbox goes through the centre of the flywheel into the spigot bearing, running without it will soon cause gearbox bearings some grief.

Aha... So that's why my gearbox started to whine! Hahahaha, I'll check that one when I split the engine and box - cheers!

Good luck sorting your new lump out :)

No probs, and thanks!

If you know you're running without one, that could be a problem.
Whining is more often diff or lack of gearbox oil on an E30 though.

Good luck! :D

Mine was in an e28. Engine and box are now on a pallet outside my mates house though - so I will definately check next time!! lol.

The big ends went before the gearbox anyway

I say this without meaning to be rude, but I did a search and found my answers.

You need to (so I gather)....

Shorten the prop and put the m30 end on the e30 prop
bash the bulkhead behind where the head will sit, and near where your clutch rest is for exhaust clearance (makes it easier)
adapt your round plug engine loom to fit the e30 fusebox
put your 535 ecu in (will come with the engine loom, not sure if you need to modify the in car one or if the e30's ECU is also in the engine loom???)
fit a 325i gear selector plate/rod/stick, apparently this fits straight in or just shorten yours to suit
fit the e34 radiator, with an electric fan instead of viscous if you don't have room
maybe grind back the seam on the inlet manifold if it touches the master cylinder
shorten the radiator pipes if necessary when fitting
make sure the coolant expansion tank is higher than the rest of the engine

that's about it I think

M3 exhaust maded to the M30 downpipes.
a M3 prop is a straight fit.
bulkhead bashing is not necessary in most cases.
in most cases the engine loom simply plugs straight into the car loom. a few tweaks are needed but the car will run without them.
E28 535i radiator is best as it's thinner and gives more room. some on here use the thicker E34 one.

go on, do a lot of searching and reading!!!! bung "M30" onto the search function and set an evening aside to read!!! :D

thanx guys, believe me iv done loads of reading but i just thought i would ask to make sure there was nothing i missed. will be starting next weekend hopefully, how hard is it to make the engine mounts? i have read about about it but have no welding experience, might have to just hand that job over to a pro... time wise im guessing a weekend should do. would you say thats a bit too hopeful? haha. thanx again, i'll post some pix when i get started...

Cheers for clarifying that Gareth - I was writing what I had read.

I hope to smash the hell out of my bulkhead and sit the engine as far back as possible. I don't care what it looks like under the bonnet, or if I have to remove my heater box etc, I just want some better weight distribution if possible lol.

Would the 318i prop be OK with the torque? Are they thinner/weaker than 6 pot props for example?

If you have no welding experience, or are asking how difficult it would be to make the mounts, then personally I suggest you get them made for you or buy them off e30.de or similar. I hope to make my own.

Just take note of where the brake rod runs on the inside of the bulk head if you are going for some heavy bashing.

Update time! It's been a while since any major work so....

I have committed myself to the turbo plan! winkeye

Although today didn't quite go to plan.

I have four days off work this week and just two of them (today, wednesday, and tomorrow, thursday) to fit my spare M30 3.5 engine so I can remove and rebuild my (already rebuilt) engine to turbo spec. It's my only car so I need it to be running by monday morning, and I'm out friday to sunday! :?

I got delayed today and didn't get started until 1:30pm. But, in the lovely sunny weather, I worked like mad and, on the road and without air tools, I got my engine ready to lift out minus electrics, gearbox, clutch and flywheel, three and a half hours later. Well chuffed with progress! :D Apart from two broken exhaust manifold to downpipe studs!

Image

I constructed my extremely heavy engine hoist, sweat pouring down my face in the heat, to find that the hydraulics had given up and it wouldn't lift the weight of it's own ram. It was fine a couple of months ago!

Image

So, engine is still in and ready to be lifted out tomorrow, as long as my mate can get his engine hoist to me in the morning! :?

While the engine is out I also plan to replace my E36 steering rack, which has a bit of play in it, with my Z3 rack - to give a quicker steering ratio. Got a set of brand new E30 track rods and track rod ends to go on too.
I also plan to replace the horrid, naff looking, emergency fitted brake line across the bulkhead with a more subtle better routed pipe and bleed the brakes.

If anyone cares, or even if they don't, I'll report my progress tomorow!

Martin.

Good Luck for tomorrow!

That engine hoist looks a bigger feat of engineering than the engine conversion itself! Although I can't talk I'm usually making my own tools for specific jobs and the tools usually take longer to make than the job they are made for :D

Thanks!

It does seem quite heavy duty, even on it's longest reach it's rated at 250kg. I only bought it a few months ago off Ebay for about £53.

I hoped it would work more than once though! :(

TURBO :thumb: nice martin, very nice. Good luck with it all mate and I hope your mate can get you his engine hoist, nothing worse than not being able to do the job in hand due to tools. If you where closer you'd have been welcome to borrow mine.

Keep us updated dude, it'll be an interesting read :D

oh yes he has been bitten by the power bug

good luck with getting the 2nd big 6 in, at least you can take your time fixing and turboing the original big 6.

the engine crain is a bit of a pain its pitty its sucha big engine, when i goit the 1.6 engine out my 205gti i just strapped a massive bar across the engine and with one guy at either end we lifted it out.

that was hard work and i am glad i had angy Gall and his Engine crain for my conversion as the m30 lump may have been slightly difficult without it.

let us know how its going

Thanks for all the kind comments everyone! :D

But Charlie, I don't have a nice dry garage to work in, it just isn't big enough so it's out on the road with a red raw gravel-rashed back for me! :(

With huge thanks to Theo325 (sorry about the t-shirt!) who kindly came round and provided a very helpful extra pair of hands today the spare engine went in very easily.
Can't say the same for the gearbox which proved rather reluctant to go on but we got there in the end!
My limbs are so stiff now I can barely move! I really should do some regular excercise! :?

I got most things connected back up but called it a day without quite getting it finished.

While the engine was out we also got the E36 steering rack out and replaced it with a Z3 rack with new track rods and rod ends.

As I'm out all day tomorrow (zoo) and saturday (zorbing) I'll have to finish on sunday. :(

I'll report my progress! :)
