Yet Another 335I! ... Now With Turbo
Moderator: martauto
I'll get some daytime pics at the weekend.
They just look so
I don't usually bother with tarty styling stuff, but I'm glad I did that!

Some daytime pics with IS front lip and 'blacked' headlamps. It's also on the new set of H&R 60/40mm springs, and it drives very nicely!

More work to come next weekend, and I can't wait! I'm well enthusiastic with it at the moment!

Thanks!
But I painted my chrome grille black!
I don't do chrome, I leave that to Cliffy!
Hopefully it won't be long before I also get the bodywork sorted out and a re-paint to tidy it up (it isn't very nice close up).

What did you use to tint the indicator/rear lenses, or are they pre-made like that? Quite fancy aiming for this look on my black 325i.
Cheers,

Thanks!
All I used was a £7.99 aerosol can of light tinting spray. A bit council maybe, but I think it did the job ok. And you can decide for yourself how much you spray on and how dark the lamps go. All I did was clean the lamps and mask the bits around them before spraying.
Much cheaper than buying new lenses!

Very nice martin, i'm looking forward to seeing this in June.
I thought for a minute that there was one strange round looking foglamp, but then realised its a duct up to the air filter which is on the "right" side.
Is the cage a full one, or a rear only. I would love to get a full cage to fit to our 200sx as I would feel a lot safter doing silly things in it then.

Thanks guys!
I had a 200sx (S13) a few years back, great car!
The cage is a basic O.M.P. six point with removable diagonal, not through the dash or anything trick. I'll have a look for / take some pics. To be honest I'm not sure how effective it is as it's only bolted in, and I don't intend to test it!
My air filter is probably not ideal - K&N cone on the wrong (right) side near the exhaust manifolds. I might change this soon.
Jon - I'm really looking forward to seeing all the zoners and their cars in June too, for the biggest road-trip I'll have ever done! Should be a great few days!

Which meet in June ?
I do like the ride height, just a shame theres not some more sump/ground clearance on 335's, hence i keep a spare sump !

Hey, guess what?im just the starting my 335i mission, and i have millions of questions. What did you do for the prop?also when you ordered the e30.de mounts, how long did it take?i mean do they end up in customs for ages?do you just pay for them by card?im really really impresed with what youve achieved, and yes, i have the soon to be replaced dreaded drums!thanks for the inspiration!Alex
Im a two car man. Shame my bike gets used more.Damn the MOT!
Cheers Alex!
There are quite a few 335is on here.
You could do a search and read up other people's threads too.
You can use an E30 M3 prop if you can find one!
Or use a shortened front half of an E34 535i prop and standard rear part of an E30 prop.
My mounts came from Germany in little over a week, I paid by Paypal.
Maybe you should start a thread and keep us all updated with pics and any questions you have that me or the other 335i owners can help you with!
Good luck!
Martin.

Thats awesome, when i get home(with the girl at the mo in leeds) ill throw sum pics online. Its a bit bare at the mo tho! When you say front half of e34 prop connected to e30 one, my prop is from an m10 1.8, secondly does the e34 front bit mate with the splines of the e30 one?Cheers once again

No probs!
I can only speak from my experience, I started with a 325i,
but the rear half of the E30 prop could all be the same ? I'm not 100% sure.
My 325i rear half of the prop did fit the E34 splines though.

that's interesting martin. so no welding was needed on the prop? the jared squares website (or something like that!) he used the rear of the E30 prop and the front of the E34 535i one. on all of the E34 props i've seen, the centre coupling is a totally different design and would not mate up.
oh, i had an idea about airboxes earlier that would work well on yours... or indeed turbo conversions.
if you use a E32/4 airbox (like mine) and relocate the air feed from the bottom front to the bottom right side, you could easily run a great big fat airhose through that knockout plate on the wing that the aircon models use and down to the foglight hole. i reckon it could run totally sealed with something like 4" hose
i also had an idea about sumps (been thinking a lot this weekend!). i might get hold of another one and modify it (cut about 20mm out and reweld) to give some sensible clearance. mine has got newish scratches on it since fitting it
a smashed sump was the reason i pulled out the M20 originally.

Errm, am I getting confused then ?
I had the front half of the E34 prop shortened, perhaps you are right about it not fitting the E30 rear half. It's got me wondering how I did it now!
Air filter idea is interesting. I've got a standard E32 air box now (and a new genuine filter element to go in it), I've also got Toby Unna's old inlet manifold with the air intake on the other side awaiting delivery.
Mmmm, I wonder what I've got planned!

afaik you need to weld the gearbox / guibo flange of the M30 prop to the E30 front section and shorten it a but while you're at it. the M3 one is basically the same spec.
this is a pic of a E35 535i prop (left) and a E30 M3 one (right) which shows the differences. they won't simply mate up though that chap in the states reckons 'his' did with no wleding. maybe they got different parts over there?

Sorry if I've been spouting a load of twaddle Alex, and everyone else!
Just measure up with the engine and gearbox in position, take both props to a machining company and say "sort it please mister!" !

That air filter is near impossible to fit on the N/S if you have ABS, even with out ABS it will be a tight fit. I was going to use one on mine with that twin TB i've been trying to fit for the last ten yearsDRIFTBOY wrote:

I'm now going to use a BMC CDA filter pod thing and i'm having to get all arts and crafts to make a plug mold thingy to make an elbow out of G/F to join them up.
It's in an early rough form in the pics but it's roughly shaped foam covered in clay. The two smaller take offs on the bottom are for crank case breather pipe and ICV, these are overly long and will be cut later on.

i planned to route that into an airbox as you suggest, but never got round to it so it remained a cold air feed to a cone.

that's the kiddie!
the pain being that i like having foglights and brake ducts so i may have to take it from an extra hole nearer the middle. i doubt this is worthwhile on a n/a engine as mine pokes the nose of the airbox through a hole in the plastic trim behind the lights so get pretty cool air from there i reckon. worthwhile on f/i though.

ok i've been reading as much as i can about these conversions. i plan to buy another e30 320i (a broke ma last 1, lol) and get a 535i conversion, i know a guy who is a god with cars and would defo be the cheapest for me. can any1 give me a brief run down on wot i need to do basicaly! do i need any custom part like driveshafts mounts etc.. please help guys!!! also after that i seen a really cool turbo conversion on an e30 335i which i think he used the 535i engine in a car magazine which i'm guessing is the guy above, wot do i need for the turbo conversion and wot power am i looking at? any information would be gr8. cheers ps, did he really use a turbo from a lorry, lolol
Above post been answered on another thread I believe!
Thought I'd do a bit of engine surgery today to try and get rid of my annoying rattle.
Was replacing (things I should have replaced in the first place
) the timing chain tensioner and slipper pad, camshaft sprocket and while I was there thermostat.

Then I found this -

It's a broken tensioner for the small oil pump drive chain.
Was just hanging there with the chain flopping around!
Don't know yet if this was the cause of my rattle or not, I expect I'll have to order a new one from BMW and blag lifts to work and back this week!
Also, the crank pulley is in two parts hels together with 8 x 8mm bolts. Even though I had tightened these to the correct torque setting I only had 3 finger tight bolts left in it!

I've not seen one of those broken before ? Erm, i'm guessing the metal leave spring things and the rest of the plastic bits will be in your sump ?
It's more comon to see the plastic chain guide in bits because the plastic goes brittle.
Did you have fun getting the big nut and vibration damper hub off ? Did you need a puller to get the hub off ? Don't lose the woodruff key thing !
Did you see if you have one of those little balls by your chain tensioner ?
This is what the oil pump chain tensioner is supposed to look like. The pic is big so i've only posted the link.

I replaced the plastic chain guide when I broke that taking the engine apart!
I had to use the old breaker bar / starter motor trick to get the crank pulley nut undone!
A couple of pry bars got the hub off without too much of a struggle!
Woodruff keys and dowels are safe!
There is the little ball in the tensioner (what does that do ?) but it is worn on it's friction surface. Thought a new one would be a good idea.
Thanks, for the link! I looked at one of my old photos on my pc and zoomed in! Your's is a much clearer pic!
