It sounds like youre talking about the prop centre bearing - you 100% need that.

'Part No.3' is the vibration damper and is right up by the gearbox, under the gear linkage.

Ive fitted thw 2.5 one... the one at the top of the picture, Huum changed over all the linkages aswell so find it odd that it would be catching.

The rubber donut thing at the very top of the picture I fitted aswell, would that be causing it?

You need that as that connects prop to gearbox. It could be catching, might be worth checking, but I think you said the noise goes away when you depress the clutch pedal - if so, then I doubt its that because it will rub the linkage whenever the car is moving, no matter what the clutch is doing.

The M20 gearbox is known to make a rubbing/grating noise, its just one of those things and not really anything to worry about. Even a gearbox rebuild doesnt always sort it.

Part 3 can be left off with no ill effects. The bit in the middle is the support for the centre bearing, and must be intact and in good condition.
Have you slackened off the sleeve nut on the sliding part of the prop and set its length correctly?

The sleeve nut was slackened yes, how would I know if its set at the correct length?

right just got the car in the air,

I grabbed the spare gearlinkage off the old 1.8 engine, and matched them up. the 1.8 one is longer than the 2.5? correct? it looks like the prop is catching on the linkage and needs to be moved up! Would I be ok just bending it as done on the z3 lever change?

How will this affect the gear selection?

Thanks again
