Jon you are correct apart from when the TPS is falling in value the fuel is cut, not reduced, the AFR drops to 18:1 and lower but the WB02 is outa range @ that point

the key to understanding the log is what is what, and what relationship each measured value has to the next.

TPS, RPM, MAP, MAT, and AFR are the real relevant ones to look at, the Pulsewidth and duty cycles are less of an issue for me and Mark as we specced large injectors from the outset.

Good stuff innit !

Oh yeah of course it is, i'm an idiot :? it's bloody interesting, i think if i do sell mine when i'm outta uni i will do another one and megasquirt it.
When i first looked at those maps it scared the be jesus out of me but the more you look at them the more obvious relationships you can pick up on and understand. Patience with my slow brain is the key i think. :D

Think ive poped it guys :(

After trying the original vr6 ignition map with my fuel map
just to see what it went like! first time i gave it boost over 3k it knocked like fcuk!
Then felt like it was running on 4 pos 5 cyl
So stoped to have a look just to realise i had no tools or spares onboard!
Called out the brakedown service (friend with a van) pulled the plugs out cyl 5 & 6 looked black n wet?!
Limped it home!

Prety sure the head gaskets poped between the cylinders gonna have a look in the daylight.

I've been there and done that already  We found, along with the not fixed head stud a few months back, that the head bolts were not quite as tight as they should have been, so back together with properly torqued ones :D

Fingers crossed it's only a quick fix :D

Mark.

Oh bugger Len, as Ant said was there any large quantities of smoke as that is usually a good indication followed sometimes by the good old mayo.

Hope it isn't though, good luck chap.

Na no smoke! exhaust did sound funy tho.
Done a compression test today cyl 5 & 6 no compression at all  think the gaskets blown between the cylinders! as when the needle jumped on the cylinder being tested it was hissing on the one next to it!
Prob explains the pulsing from the exhaust. no water in oil as i sealed it all with wellseal.

Will be good time to give the head a once over!

Opps! but at least you don't seem too pissed off with it, to be fair you are probably getting bloody quick at taking the head on and off these days. Respect.

Oh Lame!

Hope you can get it fixed soon Len!

How much more advanced was the VR6 map than yours? Or was it just not retarding under boost?

Don't suppose anyone knows how to test a MAP sensor do they? Don't think mine's working. Also, do they need to be mounted on something metal?

my mr2 did the same thing, blew an inch long hole between 2 cylinders without going near the water or oil.

and i suspect it'll happen to the e30 eventually!

Alex, what ecu is it, emerald? will they help you troubleshoot?

Tis an Emerald yaa.

It's an external MAP sensor though. Seems to give the same reading all the time though :(

Think by now i can change the head gasket in about 2 hours in the dark on my own! so not realy a problem just a minor setback

Alex i had problems with the map sensor it was giving the same reading all the time! turned out to be wired up wrong. i would check that first.

Yeah will have to have a look at the wiring, but I tested the MAP sensor off the car with a multimeter and the readings never changed then either, despite having almost 1bar of vacuum applied!

If the map sensor value isnt changing, then you are utterly wasting your time trying to map it.

No way you will get it to work in that circumstance.

What map sensor are you using?

If you ask on passionford there is probably someone local with a 2 bar one you can have for pennies as they arent much use on a cossie as everyone goes over a 1 bar of boost as soon as they tune them.
Obivously only any good if you arent going over a bar yourself though!

It's the one in the piccie below (on the right of the picture with little blue hose going to it)

Only planning to run 7psi or so so a 2bar (which it is at the moment) would be fine.

Will have to borrow a mates to see if that works!

Cheers chaps :)

Aah sorry, see what you mean!

It's a Magnetti Marelli (sp?) one.

It was supposed to be brand new, but was an ebay purchase months and months ago so there's no real comeback now.

Oh well, will test the system with another one this weekend (if it passes the MOT) and take it from there!

Cheers :)

Len, I had a look at the ignition map from the VR6 yesterday and it looks to be pretty much the same as the map I'm using.

Think I'm gonna go through and knock a load out of the values tonight before I drive it again!

Sweeeeeeet

I have an MOT!

It also drives miles better than it did, although still not great.

Feels kinda reluctant to pull.

Probably to do with the extra fuel I dialled in all over the map and the fact that the fuel pressure's gone up too

Defo need the ciggy lighter socket operational though, thats where the logger gets its juice

:D Cheers guys, pretty chuffed, although there's still lots to do!

Just had the tracking done with much pointing and laughing at the ICs from the mechanics. Little do they know eh? :)

Gonna go out and set up the TBs so that they're all syncronised with Andy's air flow gizmo (at last, sorry Andy!)

Whilst it's much better than it was, it's still really reluctant to accelerate! It kind of gently gets up to speed. Doesn't seem to cough or splutter, just takes a while.

Didn't really wanna give it full berries either for fear of melting something.

Cheers Ant, you're a legend mate!

If I get time I'll weld a lambda boss onto a down pipe.

Would one of them be enough d'ya reckon?

Cheers!

Hooray!

Fairly productive day today:

I've got a Lambda sensor boss :D

What a satisfying job, take off a down pipe, cut boss from old M3 exhaust, weld boss onto down pipe, fit it all back up again :)

Might as well figure out how to connect a normal sensor up to the ECU now it's there too I guess.

Ooh!

Dad's managed to get the port on his laptop to talk to the Emerald so I've not got a computer that's mobile!

Also, wired up a narrow band lambda sensor.

It works, but it really is just a switch! just idling, you have a rich mix, tap out '1' on the fuel and it plumets to lean!

Also figured out how to get the data logger to work so about to go and have a play on the road :)
