Reading this is there actually a sure fire way of doing it without hammering it on to the rack and overtightening the pinch bolt? I want to put a m52 in my car with a e36 rack but dont want to go thru the parlava of modding manifolds again. Has anyone done it properly? If so how?

nope, no hammering it onto the car if you can re-build the UJ's
I have used the heavily splined end of the e34 rod though.. I am mightily impressed if I do say so myself!
