Andy,

Not being an expert and all that, but Sandy's pic shows the wheel far further in than your pic. If they are the same ET20 offset and both are running M3 setup and eccentrics I can't understand it either :banghead:

Forget the tyre size, concentrate on the wheel rim. They are clearly different. Even more toe in wouldn't sort this out surely?

I can't for the life of me see that losing the caliper backspring will do any harm other than promote a little more squealing. I guess that's what it's there for having studied the caliper.

Just thought - What about disc thickness?? Are they M3 discs. We're talking about pads being thicker but a thicker disc would cause this too.

Either way I'd be inclined to get the arches rolled and maybe surface the pads if all else fails.

Sincerely hope you sort it out mate,

Dameon.

Also,

What about reducing the camber by using the M3 eccentric strut tops like I've got. That will bring the wheel further in at the top...

Well,im stumped 8O
Shouldnt my m3 struts have eccentric strut tops as standard ? Or do you have to buy seperate ?
Mybe Sandys has the eccentric top mounts.
The disks are standard m3 ones.
I think i'll try the 3mm spacer idea and go from there.

cheers guys,

I'm stumped as well Andy!
We have the following parts exactly the same:
Toyo Proxes P1 215x40x17
BBS RC's 8x17 ET20
E30 M3 hubs and struts (mine look like they have offset top mounts)
E30 M3 Eccentric wishbone bushes

One thing I have just thought about, are your eccentric wishbone bushes fitted the right way round?
If they're not then that would push the wheel out about an inch?

E30 M3 strut top mounts are common right through the E30 range, and not unique to the M3.

Hi,

The difference from what has been said and the pictures that
have been posted are that the Touring has
Fixed Negative Camber top mounts and the Coupe has
standard M3 ones.

The Negative camber top mounts are fixed at 1.5 degrees negative
camber which will lean the top of the wheel in a few mm,
and make a 215 tyre, just inside the arch.

Toe in or out has nothing to do with camber.

If your wheels are BBS ET 20, then 215 40 17 with negative camber top
mounts should be just inside.

However, when you add the spacer it will push it back out again.

I would run with the fixed negative camber top plates, C3 BMW, stock
them, and then you may need a thin 2/3mm spacer for Caliper clearance.

Many of the M3 Guys file down the caliper springs, and I even believe
that somebody in the States sells modified ones.

As a suggestion, why do you guys never use washers
as temporary spacers to see if something fits, and then order the part when your happy that all is OK ?

Regards,

The Gorilla.

Andy,

From what I have read and experienced, E30 M3 and saloons/coupes/tourings all share the same top mounts. P/n 31331139452.

There is also an eccentric top mount manufactured with six stud holes instead of three that can be rotated 180 degrees. This will add more or less camber 'around' the standard fixed position. P/n 31331139484

I have bought these and fitted them to mine.

EDIT: sod it, out to the workshop with camera. Here you go.

Image

Image

Image

If you use these to add more -ve camber then this will likely cure the problem. Don't forget that the studs have to be ordered seperately P/n 31331092886 and nuts P/n 31331092887, you'll need 6 of each.

looking good buster. credit due. i've just spent a long time reading the original 'm50 developments' followed by this one as have got a s50 now to drop into a shell to have a manifold made for it. i'm going to run mine on omex so can do without the plenem and run socks. if it works it could be a good way for you to run your carbon airbox. i'll keep you posted.
my original m50 development is still up and rocking. well after a vanos upgrade and 2 re shells (rust and van)
i've done about 20000 miles of multivalve, economical, problem free motoring and it's all good! you've got it all to come.

yours is looking sweet now tho m8. any eta on when it's on the road?

Pretty sure I have the 6 hole top mount as I remember a bit of fannying about when fitting them.

when you look at the strut top from the engine bay id doesn't sit in the middle.....hold on, i'll take a pic!......

Thanks every one for your help.It would seem that my top mounts are the normal ones.Looking at Dameon and Sandys set ups,you both have offset top mounts.

I've definately fitted the eccentric m3 control arm bushes the correct way.

I did think about the washer spacer idea but i dont have any 3mm washers and one of my all time e30 hates the bloody wheel bolts and trying to jiggle the wheel on ! Theres no chance of wheel /bolt and washer jiggling

Randomdave,
sounds good winkeye Keep us informed and good luck.Any questions you know where to come :thumb:

SO it looks like i need these top mounts ( bloody legs and springs off again :x )
Where can i buy these from ?

Andy, would you recommend changing any of the top mount rubber bits as a matter of course when I fit my PSX kit? I have a knocking coming from the front drivers side suspension somewhere at the moment.

Well theres only the rubber in the top mount and i think its all one piece so you'd need a new top mount.I'd check see if the big nut on the top of the damper is tight or the bottom ball joints and anti roll bar links are ok if your getting a knocking noise.

Yep, Andy's on to it. That big nut on the top of the damper has been responsible for this exact same symptom on mine before.

Andy, that top mount in Sandy's pic looks just the same offset as my eccentrics. OEM dealer kit for the these mounts bud (P/n listed above iirc £40 ea.)

I reckon that they might just cure the problem with some careful wheel spacing too.

Keep us posted and let me know if I can help :thumb:

Thanks Dameon, think i'll order those from BMW next time i need some parts.

Had to change the intake boot on mine today as mine developed a crack.

Image

Nice new one in place :

Image

Just on with the back end now.I've welded on the tabs for the eccentric bolts to be used to adjust rear wheel camber.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I welded the tabs on then i had trouble elongating (sp?) the holes.I broke the stone i had for the dremmel so i had to file them out by hand.Took me 4 hours
It would have been far easier to slot them through then weld on the tabs but like usual i got carried away, welded all 4 on then realised i had a problem :?

Bought some new bushes also for the subframe and trailing arms.

Hi Tony,
Thanks :D Thats the m3 gear i bought from you.
I havent got the measurements to hand but i will measure up.I made them myself, the eccentric bolts are e39.
Only trouble is,you need the subframe off to fit them.
