Had a bit of trouble with the car this weekend. I was on my way to the Cheshire classic car show yesterday when there was a funny oily burning smell. Then whilst slowing down noticed a lot of blue smoke. Turned out to be the oil pressure switch, Oil was coming up through the middle of it and dripping on to the exhaust downpipe. Now theres a new pressure switch on there an all seems ok

Sounds even better now its been tuned. Just gotta do a few more miles then it'll go for its final tune and a power run

Really good project mate, i have sent you a pm to hound you for info!
PM sent mate.
The 316 is in for some small engine tweeks (timing chain adjustment being one) and suspension replacement as the spax kit is just too hard. I also need to fit some ARB's.

Hey Si, good to see this one is finally done! Havent been around E30's for a while - decided to check out the zone again and noticed your updated thread. Are you happy with the result? I still remember how fun mine was as a 2 litre.

Alright mate, hows trix? Im pretty happy with the results so far but im doing afew more bits this weekend. Ive got a Jaymic 4 branch manifold sat next to me which im going to be fitting this weekend. Im also finally sorting the cam timing out. When thats done its going for a re-tune and a new MOT so we'll see what shes putting out then.m10man wrote:Hey Si, good to see this one is finally done! Alright mate! Im good, Hows the Turbo M20 going?fozzymonster wrote: Yo Sy!
How's you?
loooooong time no speak!
I did get the power read outs from when i got it tuned. it made 104hp at the wheels, the power drops off at 4500rpm due to the bad cam timing which is being sorted at the moment.
I got the Jaymic 4 branch came through on friday but because the engine is really banked over in the e30 it didnt fit due to hitting the chassis
The time has come now tho and im finally going to crack out the welder and get a pipe bender to make one.
I'm going to pick some pipe up on saturday so ill keep everyone posted on the progress.

Been a while since ive been on here!
The 316 is going well. Ive sorted out the cam timing. The thing pulls like a train up through rev's now. Ive also got the exhaust manifold almost done. Just need to sort out the last pipe and that will be good to go on.
I fitted an eibach ARB kit to the car and what a change that made!!! only problem is its showing just how bad the spax shocks are now.

Its not been back for a power run yet, ill get it all setup properly again once ive got the manifold done and get some figures.
What do you want to konw about the heads mate?
What do you want to konw about the heads mate?
which is the best one to use pretty much mate i've got three heads at the min whats the differences with the heads between the 2002ti and the 518i etc im tryin to build a bored out 2.0 but have no idea where to start. So far i have the 518 engine complete two other heads i think from a 2002 and a set of throttle body manifolds that i want to run on bike carbs
The best thing to do would be to take the 518i engine and replace the crank, pistons and rods for 2002 ones.
The 518i head is the one I have. Its got the biggest ports and biggest valves. The only problem with it is the injector holes in the head. I made up some bungs and then ported them in.
The later block is also better to use.
The Bogg bro's do a manifold to bolt bike carbs to an m10. Might be better off going that route than using the carb/throttle body manifolds and then making another manifold.

i think lance1 on here is using the same manifolds with bike carbs, I do like the idea of a set of delloreto's on there though i'm not sure if it would be possible to turbo at the same time. At the minute its literally a case of what way do i go with it
Lance1 has the first m10 manifold that the Bogg Bro's made. My cousin has just had their bike carb conversion done on his Porsche 924 and id highly recommend it over dellorto/webbers anyday.
The dellorto carbs were used on the old lotus esprit turbo so they can be used. I think its just a case of sitting the carbs fully into the preasurised air box. Im not up on the forced induction side of things so im not sure but it can be done.

Its been a while......................Not really had anything to do with the e30 for the last 6 months or so. I needed something abit better on fuel for the journeys to and from work and for upto the missus. The daily driver since has been a Fiat Stilo 1.6 active sport, not bad but fwd wrongness.
Its all ok now tho and the 316 is away to get my attention again. I AM going to get the 4 branch manifold finished up soon and its getting converted to bike carbs after much persuasion from my cousin who has them on is 928.
Ill get some updated pics when ive pulled the old girl out of the garage and given her a good clean up.

Ive got twin Dellorto's which have originally come off some kind of alfa or something (5 progression hole versions). There not doing to good and keep needing to be tuned, there not ideal as its not getting the best out of the engine.
My cousins been persuading me as he's had a Bogg bro's bike carb conversion fitted to his prosche 928 for the last 18 months and he's had no tuning issues at all. They look really nice and neat aswell.

Here I am again with more updates. The BM's been on the road all summer so i've done a fair few miles! And a drift day at oulton
The 316 was brilliant at the drift day. Went sideways very very nicely!
Heres a video!

Now the weathers starting to go again its back in the garage for more tinkering!
Ive got a MegaJolt mappable ignition kit which im wiring in.
Mess of wires waiting to be loomed once the igntion wires are run.

Ignition wiring made up and labelled ready for fitting on the car.

The ignition system is all in and working. Its tucked away in the garage for winter now but will be coming out for a full tune up in the new year.
I'm in two minds about the carbs. I like the way it is but i'd love to build up my spare block with low comp pistons and bung a turbo on there.

Hi there Si, everyone,
This is a very inspiring thread. I am going to undertake a rebuild similar to yours, but before I truly begin, I am scouring the zone to find posts like these that tell me to get off my computer and dive into the engine right away!
How is it going now though? It has been a long time since your last update, the story can't just stop like that! This is truly a fascinating subject...
I also own a 316, completely bog standard, with a 4 speed 'box and a huge clock instead of a rev counter. This is the beginning of my first E30 resto, although I am familiar with restoring mainly British classic cars as it has been my job for the past few years.
I have only driven it a little since I had to replace all the rear sub frame bushes to get it through MOT as it's new owner but as it stands, it is merely a properly maintained but used work horse. Now I am not quite into wafting about in grand dad's ol' beemer as such, nor am I a crazy car molester, I just like to travel in style. Quickly if I may...
I actually bought the spare engine before the car with the intention to rebuild the unit and sell it as a standard reconditioned motor, but instead I forked out on a car to put it in so as to enjoy my own labor for once. I am tired of rebuilding engines for customers and not being able to use them other than for the odd tuning.
So being relatively unfamiliar with the M10, I thought that the good old 'hands on' experience couldn't be beaten and sourced a used block. It still needs to be taken apart and measurements taken and so on, then decide what to do on it to make it better.
Your work is very impressive, and although it dates back to quite a while, I sincerely hope that your work has paid off and you are still enjoying it today. I do also hope that you and all the other M tenners are still around here to encourage me with my own build...
It will be nice to catch up with the latest news!
Cheers

Hello!
Its been a while since I've been here!
The M10 is still going strong and up until the other day I was looking into getting the carbs retuned again as I'm struggling to find someone to do it properly! However the other night during the high winds a roof tile has decided to make a mess of my roof skin so I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out how to fix/replace it.
The M10 is a cracking engine which a lot of people don't bother with but with some carbs and a nice cam they can go really well.
There are a lot of things that can be done with the engine so it just depends how far you want to go.

I would have gladly given you a hand if I were near you for your setup, it is one of the things that I love doing. The satisfaction you get once the car runs properly is really great...
And that roof ding, that's the worst! I expect it to be a sharp dent or something. Do post a pic if you have time, might be of some use... You never know!
For my engine, I can go as deep as my wallet lets me. I just want an engine with a little more to it than the 90bhp it actually delivers. I used to have a 316i that ripped the tarmac compared to this slow poke.
I have read that you are using a 2002tii crank shaft, but it has exactly the same 71mm stroke doesn't it? I have found a set of Wösner pistons that will fit, in various bore dimensions. I just need to make some calculations now to make it a 2 litre as well... more or less.
I also believe that a cam and proper tuned carb will be enough for me, aside reboring it. For starters I am looking for a 5 speed gearbox, the original one is driving me nuts, four gears just isn't enough.
For the moment though, I need to resolve idling issues, the damn thing keeps stalling as I come to a halt and is difficult to start when it's cold. I am afraid that the previous owner has messed around with it not knowing what he was doing. He started by changing the plugs, but without setting the gap properly. That alone says a lot...
The car is chugging when you are at a stable speed, put your foot down and it pulls as it should, so I am taking the fuel pump off the list for now. I suspect the mixture strength might have been altered. I have a second carb at hand, might try that one before going for the weber conversion...
Don't pull all your hair out just yet, I am sure something can be done other than replacing the roof skin... The roof lining will probably have to come out none the less unfortunately... Heck of a job that, or so I have read.

its poked a whole right through. luckily the roof lining is already out as I've been looking at the sunroof rust. Thinking about going for a carbon roofskin.

The 2002 crank has a bigger stroke than the 316/318 one, the 2002 pistons are a different height too. All m10 conrods i believe are the same length.
Are you running the standard electronic choke carb? If so that will most likely be causing the fuelling troubles you are having as the choke sticks open!

Quite a ding, but nothing a hammer and dolly and perhaps a skim of filler wouldn't fix.

Yes I am. I have just taken out and cleaned the idle jet and there was a tiny piece of grit stuck in it. It idles a lot better now, but still a bit low some times...Si316 wrote: Are you running the standard electronic choke carb? That roof business you have going there is pretty serious. That's a nice dent right there. And a good excuse to swap the roof for a carbon one, why not.
Anyway, glad to know yours is still on the roads...
I will look into acquiring a 2002 crank then. And you have used pistons from that engine as well then, after re boring your block?
Sounds like a good alternative to me.
I'll keep you posted anyway!
Good luck with your roof then, I hope you'll follow up in due time!

Holy thread revival
The 316 has been in storage for a very long time while ive sorted my life out. Now shes back in my own garage. I'm hoarding parts and getting the mechanicals done to get her back on the road.
